Editorial Review for Opa Estiatorio – by Alice Van Housen
The Scene
This Vernon Hills Greek outpost is casual, modern and bustling. The soaring, draped ceiling and white-on-white design create the festive feel of a wedding tent. An expanse of windows overlooking Bear Lake contributes to the airy feel. Three dining rooms (one with fireplace) are packed on weekends, putting a strain on the well-intentioned servers.
The Food
A fresh fish display bears testament to the broad, ever-changing seafood specials, but there's no shortage of lamb dishes and other Greek classics; the house signature is juicy spit-roasted chicken. Salty, crusty saganaki (flaming cheese) is "opa!"-ed throughout the room. Whole grilled red snapper, boned tableside, is perfectly simple; rich, meaty moussaka outdoes many of the Greektown spots. "Se pilo" offerings, stewed and served in clay pots, include shellfish with orzo in a piquant tomato sauce. Desserts include gooey, chocolate-drenched baklava and creamy cheesecake with crispy shredded phyllo.

What to DrinkThe wine list is all Greek, but helpful descriptions aid in pairing. Or try one of a dozen ouzos for $5-$7.

Beautiful restaurant, friendly service. Can't beat the dinner on the patio by the lake for a little bit of Greece in Ilinois.
