Editorial Review for Volo Restaurant Wine Bar – by Citysearch Editors
The Scene
Small, granite-topped tables take up most of the room, making it best for couples or little groups. The dark brown walls, dim lighting, minimalist decor and velvet curtains keep the place modern, yet intimate. A bar shares the main dining room because space is limited, but customers never feel cramped.
The Food
Chef Stephen Dunne (mk, Spago, Rubicon) pairs tapas dishes such as duck confit and steak tartare with specific wine flights to take the guesswork out of choosing the right wine with your meal. The bubbly flight, which includes samples of Cava wine and champagne, and the food-loving flight, make perfect companions to the delicately seared halibut and rare sliced beef with fennel, shaved fennel and spicy greens. The true stars are the melts-in-your-mouth mussels floating in a garlic, butter and white wine sauce and the ahi tuna tataki served with marinated anchovies.

The food and wine where killer. The environment was a bit loud and you are elbow to elbow with the adjacent tables. The dishes are pretty small but well prepared. I respect a man that takes pride in his work the chef was that man. I stood and watched him for a few minutes and was very impressed. I would recommend the roasted beets, steak tartare or the polenta. We drank the 03 barbaresco, it was killer. The port was to my pleasure as well, I had the porta rocha 1975.
Pros: food, wine, service
Cons: not much space

The atmosphere and offerings of this small restaurant in Roscoe Village were generally pleasant, but the portion sizes are tiny and it is quite expensive for what you get! I ordered an the lamb, and it was excellent! The sauces were wonderful and the meat was tender and flavorful. Only flaw, it was tiny! It was about the size of an appetizer! My date ordered the kobe beef, but his was cooked in a very plain manner - kind of a shame for such good quality meat! It reminded me of a stew. It was also pretty small. Unfortunately, after an appetizer, entree, and wine, we were still hungry. Overall, I would recommend it as a nice place to go with some tasty offerings, but if you're hungry, you should probably go somewhere else.
Pros: Wine pairing with everything on the menu, interesting offerings
Cons: Expensive, little personal space
