In Short
Hidden among other storefronts--mostly galleries--this spot beckons passers-by with its serene decor. Maple and Asian touches like the infinity waterfall set a relaxing tone, while the luscious-looking cakes on display and the semi-exposed kitchen mean business. Health-conscious locals frequent the long room for vegan appetizer specialties like soy-cheese pizza and faux-meat entrees like the sloppy joe, featuring slow-cooked ground soy-proteins and spaghetti and "meatballs"--again made from soy product.

I'm not a vegetarian and I love the food at Karyn's! I took my husband, who refuses to eat vegetarian, and he can't wait to go back. The food is fresh, very flavorful, well seasoned. The service is exceptional. Dining in is great, the dining room is actually quite roomy (which is unusual in Chicago) but it can get pretty noisy at lunch time. The dessert menu is also awesome.

I really like their potato soup and their sandwiches - with the jerk tofu being a particular favorite. Karyn's Cooked is a rare thing among vegetarian restaurants because the ambiance and menu seems inviting to even the most steadfast carnivore.

This restaurant in the art gallery district has a great approach - home cookin for vegetarians and vegans. They make good use of meat substitutes like soy patties and seitan. If you're not already accustomed to these substitutes, you may want to stick with things that you've heard of on the menu here, but I think that both meat and non-meat-eaters alike will find something nourishing they enjoy.
