NICOR GAS ACTIONS QUESTIONABLE
by alexisanne at Citysearch
Our gas was shut off today without notice. We were on a payment plan because Nicor failed to send us a bill on new construction after we made several calls to them begging for a bill. We were finally on a payment plan and I was late, just several days, on one payment a few months back and on one a month ago. Days not months late. They turned off our gas supply without letting us know and they said they sent a notice. I called them today and could get nowhere. Finally I paid the bill in full on the phone and our gas will not be on until 8/27, FIVE DAYS. I asked why and they said I had to take what the computer is giving me. For all these days we will have no bathing capability, no dish washing, no stove for cooking, no dryer or washer to do our clothes. I am 65 and my husband is 68. Nicor has our money and we have nothing. This is not the way to do business.

My fiance and I are going through a similar problem. We were all set up for the e-billing way back in october of last year. Unfortunately, something went wrong and we unknowingly were taken off the program. Something always seemed a little off when we balanced the check book, but we figured not everything was accounted for and wrote it off. (at this time we had NEVER recieved anything in the mail) I became pregnant with my first and it slowly turned into a high-risk pregnancy. I was very sick and on bedrest collecting expensive medical bills while my fiance worked 65 hour weeks when we recieved a shut-off notice in the mail from Nicor stating we had one week to pay our past due balnce in full before it would be shut-off. Our late fees and bill added up to almost $4500 and simply could not be paid in full. I called to set up a deferred payment plan and was told I was not approved. Inevitably the following week our gas was shut-off. The only way out of it was to fax over a medical form from my doctor explaining how the shut-off would harm the pregnancy and that it should be immediately turned back on. You have two weeks to send in this form according to Nicor or your ineligable for a turn-on without paying in full. Well, we faxed that form over every day that nicor said it wasnt recieved. Nothing wrong with the fax machine, nothing wrong with the fax number. 15 times we faxed the medical form over. Two weeks went by without service and we recieved a phone call. NICOR HAD JUST THEN (after the cut-off date) RECIEVED THE MEDICAL FORM AND WOULD NOT HONOR IT! Pretty convienient huh?! I am now 39 weeks pregnant, without hot water, hot food, and soon a warm house. My pregnancy is suffering 10 fold. Customer service at Nicor might as well have told me to shove it.
They are a shady company hiding forms to save a buck!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EFF THEM!!!!!

You were lucky my daughter had to wait 10 days for the check to clear

My daughter just had a baby and with the doctor bills and everything else they missed the payment to Nicor she called and asked to be put on a payment plan so she could pay them off over time as she did not have over 1000.00 for the past two months bill (which is crazy in itself) Well they took her first payment of 250.00 and shut her off the following week I called them and asked them how they could shut off the gas with a baby in the house and they said they can after the 1st of April Since the snow was still flying in April this seems pretty harsh. I went and paid the full amount at one of their agents by check. And then called and asked when they would turn the gas on and they advised two weeks because they had to wait 10 days for teh check to clear the bank Everyone knows in this century with computers and high tech everything it does not take 10 days to know a check is good or not. So I told them if my bank shows the money is gone the next day then it is in there account and I wanted it turned on at which point they advised that they would have a supervisor call me back I waited 3 hours for the call and called back at which point I was told it would take 3 DAYS before a supervisor would call me At this point I lost a little of my pleasantness and advised I have never heard of such a thing 3 DAYS for a call back. They then proceeded to transfer me to a supervisor who advised me they did not care if there was a baby in the house and that I could place a stop payment on the check and pay in cash then they would not have to wait until the check cleared I said if I go and do that when will the gas get turned on they said you will have to make an appt and it will be a week to two weeks I went balistic and they hung up on me. Believe me if there was another game in town I would switch. At this time I am writing all the government officials I can think of. I know it is a long shot anyone will do anything but at least I am calming down a bit...
