No scary Indian food here! Fresh, spicy and BYOB, Indian Grill provides a cheap and thrilling evening in the neighborhood.
This Lincoln Park Indian eatery supplies curry and vindaloo outside the realm of Devon Avenue..
In Short
White tablecloths and soft Indian music create an atmosphere perfect for the 20- and 30-something neighborhood couples who flock for a romantic interlude. Though the dishes may not be as spicy as what you'd find on Devon, they compensate with heaping portions, a variety of vegetarian options, and plenty of naan. To get a sample of the restaurant's fare, order the vegetable bhojan, a large platter of lentil dal, vegetable curry, samosa, salad, dessert and naan. If you're one of the ubiquitous romantic couples, try the tandoori chicken--a whole chicken marinated in yogurt and blend of Indian spices--which is perfect for two.
Best Indian food in the city. I think this is the best indian restaurant in the city including on Devon. I am indinan and have eaten in many indian restaurants. The chicken dishes are nicely done and the chicken is not overcooked like in many indian restaurants. It's moist and juicy. We order from this place often and I can't wait every time.
Not Recommended. Sub-par Food, Overpriced, Small Portions.. Sorry to disagree with some of the other Reviewers, but we thought this Indian restaurant was subpar at best. Somosa appetizer was admittedly the high point of our meal, but went downhill quickly. The Vegetarian Combo Entree ("Vegetable Bhojan") priced at $14.99 should really be an appetizer as the portion sizes were extremely small. Major dissappointment was the Mutter Paneer - peas tasted right out of the can. The garbonza beans also had a 'canned' off taste, and eggplant dish (Baigan Bharta) was just so-so. As for the meat Combo Entree ("Indian Grill Special) overpriced at $19.99, while portions were ok, we found the chicken a bit off (as others have commented), the roggan josh average, with only our lentil-based Dal Makhani a dish up to par. Inexcusably, half our Naan was burned and the accompanying Rice was bland and clumpy. All in all, we thought the food was overpriced, portions under-sized, and taste well below average. Howver, we would agree with others, that the Service was excellent and friendly. But, while good food can make up for bad service, the reverse is not the case. If you're looking for good Indian Food in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, we highly recommend Radhuni, 3227 N. Clark. (like Indian Grill, its also BYOB).
Dissapointing. Being indian myself, and having eaten at hundreds of different indian restaurants worldwide, i would say this place is far from impressive, its dissapointing. I have even eaten at their brother restaurant Bombay grill in Champagne illinois, which is a great place, with great service and food. This place is the complete opposite. The service, shes terreible. People were impolite, and rude. Most of them are Hispanic!! I even got a peek in the kitchen and i didint see a single indian. The food is bland, and the grill prepares dry meal after meal. In chicago you could find better indian food just about anywhere. If your in the depaul area and want some good eats, just travel the extra 20 minutes or so and go to devon.
Dodgy place.
We didnt order the Tandoori though we wish we did... we weren't particularly pleased with the Bindi Masala or the Chicken Jalfrezie....rather mild not even medium in heat. The service was quick and prompt and the place was clean.
We planned on going back but when I looked at my statement online (we used a credit card), we were overcharged. I called the Merchant personally, and was promised that he would credit me back. When I didnt hear from him, I processed the claim with the bank card.
We are not going back, and I am going to let my friends know not to go as well... Something about a dodgy restaurant doesnt go well with my palate.
Delicious!. We ordered from the Indian Grill and were quite happy. The service was friendly from start to finish and the food, especially the saag paneer and the simosas, were delicious.
Best indian buffet in Lincoln Park. I have heard this place rivals Tiffins on Devon. It's clearly the best indian buffet in the area. They have wonderful chicken makhani! The nan bread is brought to you table piping hot. The other indian buffets in the area don't have much of a spice to them. Indian Grill has a nice kick to its dishes, just to put you on the verge of breaking a sweat.
Meat and seafood dishes prepared in a tandoori oven entice Lincoln Parkers craving Indian food..
In Short
Simple white tablecloths and square tables line the rectangular dining room of this friendly Northside Indian restaurant. Diners take advantage of the spot's tandoori oven, ordering sizzling plates of chicken marinated in yogurt and spices, prawns or piping hot naan. Vegetarian dishes include the channa masala, or chickpeas with tomatoes and spices, aloo sag with potatoes and spinach or dal makhani, a spicy lentil dish in a tomato cream sauce.
