Editorial Review for The Kerryman Bar & Grill – by Jennifer Olvera
The Scene
Inviting and intimate, this multilevel hang has compass-inspired decor and two bars that pack to the hilt with a professional, beer-slinging crowd. Small groups nosh at padded leather booths on the mezzanine level and high-top tables on the third floor while peeking at the main bar below. Typical tunes range from Green Day to--surprise, surprise--U2.
The Food
Focusing on comfort cuisine, the extra-creamy, piquant three-cheese macaroni alongside a balsamic-doused, beet-specked house salad is a meal to crave on a blustery day. Crispy, kettle-fried fish-and-chips with tangy slaw make good on a pub staple. The bevy of finger foods, including citrusy, chili-rubbed grilled shrimp with basil aioli and sweet-spicy Bass Ale onion rings with horseradish sauce, demand Black and Tans. The large menu also includes hand-carved sandwiches, burgers, chicken potpie and shepherd's pie.

Insider Tips
What to DrinkBeyond its basic taps, the restaurant serves a mean snakebite (Magners Irish cider, Harp and black currant) as well as Guinness, Smithwicks, Bass and Harp.

The asinine door guy told me and my friends they were at capacity (at 10 PM) and we could only go inside as the appropriate number left. We'd have gladly left, except half our party was already inside. The door guy knew this and used it to his advantage to keep us in line for a half hour. A line for Kerryman?? Please. The place was incredibly empty once we got inside, and the music beyond lame. And conveniently, the one in-one out bs was apparently out the window a few, as we saw people coming in by the dozens. I still can't believe the pompous door guy. With all the other great places in the neighborhood, you REALLY think there's a real need for a line at Kerryman? Never again.
Pros: roomy inside, since it's rather empty
Cons: pompous door-guy, music

I went to The Kerryman on the suggestion of an old college friend that lives in Chicago. We arrived around 9pm, so getting a stool at the bar wasn't an issue. Overall solid bar with good service. A little too clean of an Irish bar for me though.
