Hamburger Mary's is quite the experience. The toppings in the burgers is what you should aim for. Also, tots. Always tots.
You want some colorful mixed in with your sustainable and green? No problem - Hamburger Mary's is the place for you. Serving delicious hamburgers up along with some Drag Queen's and crazy partying, Mary's is knock your socks off fun and a member of Chicago's Guaranteed Green Restaurant Coalition.

The gayest burger in all of Chicago (except dollar burger night at Big Chicks).
LOVE Hamburger Mary's. This is a really fun restaurant. The staff is super friendly without being 'fake polite', the food is great and they serve very generous portions- like 1/2 pound burgers-a great value for a sit down restaurant! It's kitschy, campy, fun. I don't understand the negative reviews. This place is eco-friendly, has a very diverse staff and they are very active in community fundraisers. The Attic upstairs has karaoke and shows. They really make an effort to make it a unique dining experience. As for the check in the high heel shoe all I can say is lighten up! It's not like they're using old shoes.
I do not see the appeal of this establishment..
I do not agree with those who enjoy this place. I had horrible experience there. The waitress took my order as the same time as my buddy and served us 20 minutes apart. The staff was not enjoyable to be around and I hate to admit that I got sick on the meatloaf aka mystery meat.
I would not recommend this place to anyone and have avoid this place for the last 4 years - like the plague.
Try something different. Hamburger Mary's is a colorful place to eat with good food. The sampler appetizer platter is awesome. The handcrafted beer is unique. If you are a person who has an open mind and loves new things - head on over. If you have a closed mind - skip it. FUN TIME!
Skip it....
My husband and I were looking for a new place to try this afternoon. He suggested this place, so we went. We were seated pretty quickly, just had to wait for a table to be cleaned off. Host was very helpful and friendly. Our waitress on the other hand... We ordered drinks, I ordered a drink, my husband a soda. It took about 15 minutes for my drink to come, when she said it was going to be a few more minutes for the soda, he switched to a drink and I asked for a water when she had a minute. Which didn't seem to make her very happy. Ordered, food came out fairly quick, it was decent. But our server was too busy waiting on a different table to even check in. Then she disappeared. We had to ask the host for water, which he brought immediately. She did show up to drop off the check (which I agree with previous reviewer, is disgusting to put in a shoe!!)
Maybe we were just expecting more, but we will not be going back to Hamburger Mary's! I think we will try this Huey's, the other's have mentioned.
Good Food, Fun Atmosphere. This is a fun place with really decent flavorful food. A big variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches and some really creative drinks. Most of the staff is fun and seem to enjoy their work. Nothing fancy but never been disappointed!
Bad everything.... This is the worst restaurant in Andersonville. If you want a good burger, go across the street to Huey's. At Mary's you will just be paying extra for horrible food, bad service, bad attitude and a bad time. How you can make a burger taste that bland is beyond understanding, and a half pound of bad burger is hard to swallow. Don't waste your time telling the owner, he thinks this place is a burger palace. Come to think about it, just don't waste your time in this restaurant.
If you are seeking a great place for the family & Hamburger, Pass this up!!!. I went there with a couple of friends from Calif. They had just adopted a child and wanted to revisit Hamburger Mary. On their first visit last Nov. The staff, atmosphere was great, maybe they had just opened, this time around if was a terrible experience. It was a warm July night and we want to eat outdoors. The hostess seemed like she was tired, bored and no personality of wanting to assisted us. It was not that crowded because it was a weeknight. We were told it would be a min. because all the tables were used, and someone had to bring out more. Well that min. turned to 15 mins. Someone did come out to set the tables up, but was told to come back inside. My friend asked the waiter, who seem rude and uncarrying on the situation{if he needed help, he should have asked for assistance]After waiting for over 15min. and those of you who have kids when they are hungry, need I say more.We just left, went to get the kids a hamburger at Huey's across the street. Which by the way, The burgers are much better, and they do have REAL Chicago polish & Fries. We ended up going to Charlie Ale south on Clark st. The eat outdoors, service was excellent, staff is professional and we ended up giving the waiter a excellent tip .With business coming and going in Andersonville abd the resturants are a plenty, I cannot believe that this establishment will be around to much longer with that current staff & attitude. They better hope Mary's attic will carry them because the food is horrible & overpriced. The Hamburger Mary is San Fran. is much more professional and the gay staff is attitude free, this staff should fly out there and get some lessons .
Loved it!. I went to Hamburger Mary's last night, and absolutely loved it. They have an inventive selection of Hamburgers. I ordered the Big Kahuna Burger with a veggie pattie. Portions were large, fries were great. Quick service. Upbeat atmosphere with hilarious waitress. However, if you lack humor and prefer formality, this spot is not for you.
Not Worth the Effort. I have been to Hamburger Mary's 4 times- ok maybe a glutton for punishment - but I so want it to be successful - it is *gay* friendly or gay restaurant depending on when you go - but it seems that the staff equate that with treating everyone poorly - as if that is part of the kitsch. The food is mediocre at best - and very expensive at $15 a burger. The service is horrific - took us a half hour to track down our server who promised new coffee in a few minutes - then got mad when we asked where it was. Hostess was useless when we complained - and so was HM when we wrote them - told us we had their *BEST* server the last time we were in. The worn high heel for the bill is Gross - not cute - had it been a plastic or ceramic high heel - then cute - but when you realize this shoe came off someones foot and sold at Howard Brown - YUCKO. 4th Time was a charm - we won't be back - you're better off at Huey's across the street - prices are right, service at the counter and no expectations and no $15 burger!
Terrible Food. Have heard about Hamburger Marys from a number of friends who live in the neighborhood. Interior is interesting (probably looks better in dim lighting). Ordered a sandwich (admit, I did not try the burger) but the food was terrible. Will NOT go back
