Editorial Review for il covo ristorante italiano – by Fred Schlatter
In Short
The homey interior results from exposed brick, local artwork and stylish red and black hints. Dewy, frosted glass pendant lamps cast a glow in the dining room-perfect for casual yet still white-tablecloth neighborhood dining. The all-Italian menu covers fresh and dry pastas, the former with ragus of duck and lamb, the latter with seafood and just-sauteed vegetables. Entrees cover the meat spectrum, from braised osso buco to lightly charred, delicate little lamb chops.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoThe upstairs lounge attracts neighborhood singles and stylish young professionals for appetizers and cocktails. The red-upholstered bench seating and cozy fireplace make doing just that a good idea.
Look GoodThe restaurant first opened with lots of seafood and an Australian in the kitchen-a combo that apparently didn't translate on the plate. The menu (and management) was replaced around May '07 focusing on well-executed dishes from several regions.
What to DrinkCocktails are the drink of choice in the lounge, but diners downstairs would do well to spend a few minutes with the mostly Italian wine list--it's loaded with affordable food-friendly varietals like Barbera and Dolcetto.

I tried Il Covo a few weeks ago, and it was great. I actually bought gift cards worth $50 for only $25 from LOVE fm. It was a great way to try a new restaurant. The atmosphere at Il Covo is very cozy, service is great and food is delicious. Definitely give it a try!

My husband and I tried Il Covo for our anniversary a few months ago and decided to go again for Valentines day. The service has always been great. The first time we went we felt the food was EXCEPTIONAL! Positively delicious. We went again last night, but the food wasn't as good as the first. My complaint was that I got the same spinach dish that I had gotten last time but this time it didn't have any flavor. It was supposed to have garlic on it but I couldnt taste any. I had to keep adding salt. Besides that, the salad was good, calamari was fried and battered just right. We will definitely go back, I'll just have to try something else next time.
Pros: service and ambience
Cons: parking - but thats bucktown for ya!
