Editorial Review for May Street Market – by Robyn Galbos

The Scene
Set in a contemporary space in River West, this restaurant is a neighborhood favorite. The front room features a rustic wood-topped bar on one side, and banquettes, low leather couches and cubes next to a stacked flagstone wall on the other. The dining room's floor-to-ceiling windows and diaphanous white curtains lend elegance, while seagull photographs add a touch of whimsy.

The Food
Artfully presented New American fare with a focus on fresh, in-season ingredients. Appetizers include a fun, sharable mini burger trio of venison, seared tuna and spicy beef, and a zingy Maytag blue cheesecake. Grilled venison loin chops and pistachio-crusted venison leg is accented by pumpkin puree, chive spaetzle and lingonberry sauce. For dessert: rich, banana cream pie with chocolate shavings.

May Street Market is inviting from the moment you enter. The warm tones in the restaurant are cozy and classic. It is perfect for a date or a nice group dinner. I love how they change their menu seasonally. The food tasted spot on and full of the freshest ingredients. The wine list was great and there are a lot of different wines to choose from. I would definately check it out if your looking for a great meal without all the trendy hoop-la.

Pros: Great food, cozy spot

Everything from start to finish just felt right. Hostess greeted us like a friend greeting her friends at her front door. Our server took pride in the complexities of the dishes, his expertise and the quality of the food. We started with their signature app of maytage blue cheesecake and it did not disappoint. Our entrees sang with flavor; intricate balance and blends of flavors and textures were well thought out and outrageously successful. Service was pleasant and super attentive with out being intrusive throughout the evening. When we left we felt like we were leaving a great dinner party. Definitely hope to go back again soon.

Pros: food, service, ambience
