A unique independent coffee shop worth going to

by danechicago at Citysearch

This is one of the better independent coffee shops I've found in Chicago.

It's got a lot of character to it... It's got more open space than most people's apartments.. if you're looking to go and accidentally end up chit chatting with people nearby you might be out of luck, there's so much space you'll probably feel like a stalker if you sat right next to someone else.

There's a lot of local artists art work on the walls for sale, a sectioned off library area, a few seating areas, a used books for sale area, and of course the food area.. The wifi is free.

Their breakfast bagel sandwiches are a good deal... $3 for a bagel with ham and cheese on it is hard to beat. And it's actually good too (made with a decent cheddar cheese)! I haven't had the coffee, only the chai. And it's good too. They have a case of pastries, including some funky stuff (vegan this or that, etc)

They do bike messenger delivery for lunch.

I just wish I had more time to spend here!

  • Pros: Good chai, huge quiet space, lots to do here..
  • Cons: A little dark inside perhaps

Great, DIFFERENT place to get something done at...

by PontiusRock at Citysearch

I have been studying for the GMAT here alot. The place is as big as a gymnasium. It's huge and spread out so it's easy to concentrate on what you are working on or reading. The music is always good (indie pop/rock) and usually at a pretty low level (I am usually wearing headphones). The coffee is just OK, and the food is so so, but this place is different. Definitely anti-establishment, which I like. But it's probably not for everyone. The building is really old and the layout is different. I highly recommend checking it out. Form your own opinion.

  • Pros: Free Wi-Fi, Different fun atmosphere, Friendly staff, Spacious environment
  • Cons: Interior style not for everyone, Food and coffee is average, Some lighting issues

Getting to know you...

by bullish04 at Citysearch

This is a great eclectic place to hang out and although there's music playing, you can have a conversation without yelling at each other. Interesting art to take in, a little "shop" area, tons of comfy seating. The service and staff are both great! The coffee is very good, better than some of the other more "popular" spots. I will be a regular at the Mercury, I wish them great success!

  • Pros: COFFEE, Staff, Ambiance
  • Cons: None I experienced
