In Short – The owners of the defunct Westmont spot bring their savvy for Szechuan cooking to Downers Grove, where dishes such as pepper steak, moo shu pork and sizzling rice dot the menu. Authentic Chinese specialties include pork stomach several ways, pig ear and stir-fried kidneys. Like the Chinatown location, this spot is known for its hot pots, soups made for sharing bubbling with beef, chicken, lamb, pork balls or pork intestines.
Hands down best authentic Sichuan food
by darock1212 at Citysearch
Chinese food found in Chicago?s suburbs is often bland and repeatable, catering more to a take-out crowd that would sacrifice authenticity for standardization ? General Tzo, egg foo young, chop suey, et al. It?s Lao Szechuan?s ability to transcend typical fair that makes it such a valuable addition to the arsenal of the West-suburb foodie.
In opening their book-like menu, you?ll be able to find the typical stuff of Chinese restaurants near the front. Further reading however brings you to an all-Sichuan section that?s both adventurous and incredibly delicious. Beginners (and seasoned vets) should definitely try Tony?s Chicken with Three Chili, which is crunchy, sweet, and kicks with a mellow heat. For a vegetable, try pairing the chicken with the Spicy Crispy Eggplant with Ground Pork ? while not very spicy, it has a roasty aroma and subtle oiliness that?s very appealing.
These are just two of my favorite picks, however I?ve had quite a few other dishes from the Sichuan menu, and they have all been perfect melds of heat, oil, and incredible flavor (quick recommendations for Ma Po Tofu with Pork, Tea Smoked Duck, and Twice-Cooked Pork). More adventurous eaters can select from a variety of traditional Sichuan dishes that utilize offal and such. While this may be out of the realm of many diners, it is refreshing to see it as a part of the offering.
Lastly the waitstaff has been extremely helpful in helping me navigate through new dishes. They seem truly pleased that people are taking notice of more traditional food and offer suggestions where they can.
So try Lao Szechuan if you would like to sample authentic Sichuan food that hasn?t been dulled for its trip to Downer?s Grove. You will see Sichuan food for what it truly has the potential to be ? inspiring.
- Pros: Authentic and adventurous food
- Cons: None noted
