Editorial Review for Virgin Lounge – by Fred Schlatter

The Scene
The Halsted side entrance has a whiff of speakeasy. Inside, red pendants and free-standing candelabras provide dim lighting to a spacious lounge area to the left and a weathered wooden bar to the right. A variety of low-slung seating options include ottomans, benches, day beds and booths. The crowd is varied; dates do dessert and drinks, while rowdier groups of young professionals share late-night meals over cocktails. Downtempo house music and softer lounge tunes can hinder conversation.

The Draw

The menu borrows heavily from Extra Virgin, translating the Italian small-plates theme into cocktail-ready potions arriving on thick wooden paddles. Standouts include rich Grana Padano fondue with crostini and artichokes for dipping, and beef carpaccio dressed with rock salt, lemon juice and arugala. Signature cocktails like Natasha's Aphrodisiac are fruity and fun, but a serious wine program features everything from Greek Moschofilero to American chardonnay--all reasonably priced and pitch perfect for the food.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Virgin is very casual despite the clubby atmosphere and intimate, date-friendly appeal.

Where to Sit

Day beds and bench seating are inviting but play havoc on your back; the corner booths and oversized chairs are preferable for prolonged lounging.

I stopped by the virgin lounge the other night before dinner for a drink with my fiancee. I liked the atmosphere of the place alot and the drinks were decent. The one thing that suprised me was that for how nice the place was, they served ther non-wine/beer drinks in dixie cups. I don't know if they do this all of the time or if it just happened this one time we happened to go. I would go back again, but I'm sure there are better places out there.

Pros: Ambience

Cons: Drinks were ok

The adjoining lounge of Extra Virgin attracts a nighttime crowd for cocktail-friendly Italian appetizers and on-your-haunches seating.  See the full editorial review.
