“My haircut looks great, I feel great about the price (A full-out haircut and a back-of-the-neck lather/shave it is $15, including tax), and I am definitely going to be getting my hair cut there as long as I am in Chicago.”

Good People, Great Place. These guys do it right. The place is set up with a lot of old school memorabilia and a nod to barbershops back in the day. I have been going here since they opened and would say that the staff and owner are skillful, quick, pleasant very accommodating and laid back. There is a nice waiting area to read a magazine, play pool, or even have a PBR (complimentary - in the fridge). Obviously if you make an appointment (one of the few spots that does accept them), don't be late. There is no drama, so check it out.
Avoid this place.
I had a horrible experience at Belmont Barbershop. I have been a customer there for over one year, coming regularly with my son. We both had an appointment on a Saturday. I arrived at the shop 15 minute late(I called ahead to say I was going to be late). Josh Cooley, the owner, was extremely rude to me on the phone. When I arrived, he refused to cut my hair and my six year old son's hair.
I have been there many times with an appointment where they were running 15-30 minutes behind schedule. It has never been a big deal to wait, as the place has a relaxing atmosphere.
Mr. Cooley, the owner, in my opinion, does not understand the first thing about good customer service. Being rude and inflexible is no way to treat your loyal customers.
Needless to say, we will NOT be returning to this place again. The last thing I need is to be treated poorly by my barber. Keep it up Josh, and before your know it, you won't have any customers left.
What's Not To Like?. The staff are friendly, they accept walk-ins (but I think you can call ahead too), the space is very comfortable and has a great old-school decor, it is inexpensive, and the best is you can shoot some pool and grab a PBR while you wait. I like the haircut and the straight razor neck shave. More importantly, my girl likes the way I look too.
You don't need anything fancy. Just a simple barber shop with great barbers. Quick but thorough, great ambiance without being pretentious.
GREAT haircuts. I've worked at a number of salons and even barbershops, and of all of these places Josh and Billy give the best men's haircuts... I send my fiance' there instead of cutting his hair myself! Try them out, and a round of pool while you're at it!!
It's just men's haircuts and shaves.. You may find a better barbershop, but you'll have to leave the city. This is a back-to-basics regular old barbershop. They only cut men's hair and shave their faces. You can shoot pool before or after your haircut. It's appointment first; if they're booked, you'll have to wait. Most of the time the wait is not very long if any. Parking is refreshingly easy. Don't waste your time at the other shops, these guys got the classic skills and are familiar with the newer styles. You can't beat the price. $15 for a haircut and $30 for a shave.
1 year anniversary. As the shop comes upon its 1 year anniversary I feel I should say something. The Belmont Barbershop is excellent. I followed Josh from his former position at a place (which shall not be named) and have never been anything but satisfied. Both Josh and Billy have cut my hair and shaved my face and I have no complaints.
Men's Haircut in Chicago couldn't be better.
The Belmont Barbershop, in a couple of words, is tremendously cool. I just moved to Chicago and wanted to find a place in between the salons that over-charge $50 for a mens haircut and a place like Great Clips. Basically, I wanted a salon-quality cut at a reasonable price. The result: they deliver on their promise of being excellent barbers.
Josh and Bill are pretty cool guys. From the moment you walk in, you feel that youre in a relaxed, down-to-earth, and yet unmistakably stylish barbershop. When you spot the giant framed poster of the Raat Pack hanging over the new-looking pool table, you know your hair is in some great hands.
These guys KNOW mens hair very well. My haircut looks great, I feel great about the price (A full-out haircut and a back-of-the-neck lather/shave it is $15, including tax), and I am definitely going to be getting my hair cut there as long as I am in Chicago. This place is highly recommended.
Old-fashioned basics--a haircut and shave--keep men groomed at this Lakeview barber shop..
In Short
This Lakeview barber shop keeps it old-school--just haircuts and shaves. Gents get their hair trimmed and their whiskers cleaned by a straight razor by either Joshua Cooley or Billy Stump, who end each appointment with a hot lather neck shave and a bit of upkeep around the ears. A billiards table keeps men occupied while they wait for their no-frills pampering session.
