Housed in a re-purposed warehouse space behind the Ohio Street on-ramp, this nuevo Mexican cantina attracts a stylish River North crowd to its long tequila bar and dining room done up in rustic wood and colorful local art. The menu is a small plates format featuring familiar Mexican ingredients in unfamiliar preparations; guacamole comes in a flight, an al pastor preparation is deconstructed and queso fundido is flamed tableside a la saganaki.

I made reservations for part of 10 at Zocalo?s, management stressed for me to be prompt or they would charge me fifty dollars on my credit card that they insisted I give over the phone at the time I made the reservations. Well??. I was on time and they made my party and I wait twenty minutes for our table. It took forever for our server to attend to us, they took the longest time to bring our drinks and food, not once did they ask us if we wanted more drinks. After making us wait so long for our table, food, drinks they emphasized that we needed to be out of the dinning area by ten thirty so they can prepare for the night club. The food was over priced for the amount of portion. As people inquire about Zocalo?s I would not recommend it at all.

I used to visit the previous restaurant in this location, Chilpancingo, and loved it. Went to Zocalo with a group and found it to be EVEN BETTER. The small plates are perfect for sharing, they are authentic flavors presented in a more upclass setting without being pretentious. The mini tortillas were a surprise as well. So good I'm guessing they're made in house. Ther service was friendly and explained dishes without being condescending. Best of all - the pineapple mojitos. Seriously - if you go, have one (or two!)
