Blond hard wood floors and a drop ceiling put the focus on the dozens of racks of gowns filling the space. One wall features shelves holding bolts of thick fabric. A solid, glass-topped credenza anchors the room, acting as a meeting place for discussing designs and viewing materials. Several mannequins sport some of the more eye-catching designs, and a few pedestal cases display the latest in bridal and special occassion jewelry.

Designers and owners Mira Horoszowski and daughter Yvette Simone Contorno are the forces behind Mira Couturier's dazzling reputation. The store, which moved to downtown Chicago after 25 years in Glenview, is a full-service couture salon.

The Goods
Custom-made wedding gowns anyway you want them. Mother-of-the-bride, bridesmaid and flower girl dresses. Evening gowns sequined head-to-toe. Flirty summer dresses. The fabrics are of the highest quality--Versace remnants, four-ply silk, peau de soie silk, silk charmuse, Belgium and Chantilly lace--and each piece is a one-of-a-kind, designed for individual tastes and measurements. The salon also sells jewelry and a wide selection of handbags. Need something for those up-dos? Jeweled barrettes, hair clips and headbands will do the trick. If you're watching your budget, the owners will help you keep the price down by selecting less expensive fabrics.
