Editorial Review for Swirlz Cupcakes – by Allison Knab

In Short
Pastel swirls on the ceiling and soothing brown walls enclose this tiny Lincoln Park cupcake shop. Friendly salespeople dish up regular options like chocolate, vanilla and red velvet, or rotating specials such as cappuccino, carrot cake and vanilla pomegranate. Cupcakes combine a dense cake bottom with elegantly swirled butter-cream frostings. Coffees, juices and water are also for sale.

This place was frustrating in that it is super tiny so it feels a bit cramped & rushed, therefore it isn't a very comfortable place to sit (if you can grab one of the two tables in there). To me this place seems more of an 'adult' cupcake shop: the cupcakes are subdued in flavor (not as sweet as, say, Mandy B's) and the flavors are more mature (such as rasberry), plus its more of a grab & go atmosphere. I went in the afternoon and there were only two flavors left to choose from. I grew up in areas that never even had cupcake shops, so to me this place is still considered gourmet (which I think is what they were going for). If you like your cupcakes less sweet & less colorful, and simply just want to grab one and go I would recommend this place. My favorite, however, is still Mandy Bs (both for their cupcakes and for their atmosphere); much tastier & less expensive!

Pros: Good flavors (but not exactly 'packed' with flavor)

Cons: Not worth the price
