In Short – In the former space of Hillary's Urban Eatery, brother and sister team George Djurovic and Angie Kongabel have opened a grocery store focused on helping people make simple meals with fresh ingredients. With an ample selection of cookbooks available to peruse, August Grocery has an open kitchen format with staple ingredients on wire racks, produce to the side and separate refrigerated cases for meat and fish. The meat is all natural and free-range, while the fish is kept whole and cut to order.

uh when are they open?

by westloopgirl at Citysearch

I have gone by to try this place out so many times because it's convenient to my house but I have yet to find them open when I try. This website says they are open at eight, but it is now almost ten on a Thursday and their doors were locked. I guess I am going to Jewel. I don't know how to rate it because I haven't been in there yet.

A unique shopping experience

by annarohrer at Citysearch

August has become my new favorite place to shop for groceries. The owners, Angie and George, both have vast experience in cooking and food preparation, and their advice certainly comes in handy when I'm stumped on what to make for dinner. Anytime I've needed help they've been more than happy to offer suggestions and tips. Their store offers basic staple cooking/baking items along with quite a few favorites of George and Angie. They also offer daily lunches and dinners to go, which are always prepared fresh and taste amazing. During the summer they have outdoor seating in their back patio. Oooooh, and the other day they were serving home-made strawberry lemonade, which was awesome!

  • Pros: the owners and their cooking advice
  • Cons: some staple items are more expensive than Jewel (but Jewel is lame so I don't mind)

The Details on August Grocery

The Extras:

Got a question about preparation? Staff is knowledgable about basic cooking and prep and the cookbooks are there for inspiration.

Know Before You Go:

Though prepared foods are hard to find, Djurovic does make one lunch and one dinner item a day (like a beef barley stew) designed to be taken out. The menu changes daily depending on ingredients.

Fun Fact:

The store does not currently offer cooking or food preparation classes, though it is something they're eying for the future.
