Tips for African Harambee Restaurant

Good portions, Good flavor. I love peanut sauce. I love it at Thai restaurants and I love it at African Harambe where you can order a Peanut Stew of beef, chicken or lamb. Don't let the mention of "chili powder" in the description scare you. Like it says "mildly seasoned". I don't mind the injera bread but the Ugali - a form of polenta - is great and that is what I order. On their seafood menu there is a "Cameroon Shrimp and Rice" which is also cooked in peanut sauce. If you like your seafood a little spicier try "Tilapia Stew" which is spiced more highly. Actually the host is very accommodating and will get you almost any dish spiced more or less. Very good dessert

Great food, lots of veggie options, great service, good wine selection, parking. Our first time to visit this new restaurant, but big fans of Ethiopian food, African Harambee stands tall. We were a party of three on a Wednesday night, a quiet enough night. We shared 2 starters, the meat rolls (chicken) and vegetable rolls (lentils) both of which were crispy, delicious and served with a sweet dipping sauce. Then we moved on to the Peanut Stew, Turmeric Ela and Dried Fruit Curry, served with rice, couscous or injeera bread. Each was equally exciting, and served with a garnish of red lentils and collard greens!

The wine list was better than expected, a choice of one of each variety: white, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio and Red, Merlot, Cabernet and Pinot Noir. I believe a full bar will be available soon.

There was one dessert which was totally underplayed by the really lovely waitress - it had no name but was a warmed fruit and nut pastry presented with a drizzle of chocolate and a small pool of strawberry coulis. It was a great surprise!

The staff was warm and friendly, the food perfect and reasonably priced. Honestly, if this restaurant was located downtown they could charge three times their very reasonable rates!

Spice-scented Rogers Park eatery from the owner of Ethiopian Diamond where cuisine from every corner of Africa is served.. In Short
Dark wood trim, nautical wood chairs paired with white linen-topped tables and tile floors do little to reveal what's in store at this African restaurant, which shares a building with Mediterranean spot Amphora. Less-familiar cuisine, including Mozambican and Tanzanian dishes, are its specialty. Lentil, potato and carrot rolls encased in egg roll wrappers and Kenyan-style lentil soup start tings off; pea flour-seasoned beef and dried fruit curry are among the hearty main courses.
