Editorial Review for Coalfire – by Fred Schlatter

In Short
This West Town storefront favors efficiency over decor; the former requires patrons to order pies at the counter, then sit, the latter amounts to emptied tomato cans as trivets, but little else. Locals and pizza buffs fill the dozen tables, sipping BYOB'd drinks while waiting for the goods. The margarita is commendable, but better with shards of spicy Calabrese sausage. The crust--blistered, salty and chewy--is the real star, however.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

The oven runs hot and cooks pies quickly. Expect to chow 5-10 minutes after ordering depending on how busy the place is.

Where to Sit

About that hot oven, the seats near the rear can get a little toasty. Opt for one of the window seats if given the choice.

This place has undoubtedly the best thin curst pizza in Chicago. The calzones are so-so, but the pizza's the best!

Pros: Pizza

Cons: can't eat enough

A solid parlor that has two things many joints don't: outstanding crust and a B.Y.O.B. policy.  See the full editorial review.
