Editorial Review for Al Primo Canto – by Valerie Moloney
The Scene
Edgebrook's reputation as a suburb within the city follows to this Brazilian eatery, a multicultural gathering spot for families and diners curious enough to travel that far west. Long wooden beams criss-cross the ceiling, calling to mind a cozy lodge space with recessed lighting and earth tones. Steel black chairs surround tables for four, spaced enough apart to accommodate servers pushing carts of pasta from table to table. Owners frequently engage in friendly chats with locals.
The Food
Traditional family-style galeteria food--oven-fired chicken, spicy lamb and slow-roasted beef shoulder--get paired with side dishes that steal the show. Garlicky, snappy french beans mingle with pearl onions, the perfect mix of snappy and soft. Cheesy polenta gets a deep-fried treatment and a gorgonzola dressing. For the meat choice, beef stands out for its tenderness; the others lack juiciness and taste. Dessert shouldn't be ignored, especially the petite-sized guava cake, a sweet treat enhanced by strawberries and almonds.
Hits: The open dining room creates an at-your-friend's house appeal, all the more pronounced by the attentive servers who frequent tables with as large a portion as diners like.
Misses: Both the rotisserie chicken, billed as having been marinated in sage and lemon overnight, and the lamb, supposedly rubbed in several spices, were dry and missed flavor.
