Editorial Review for La Cocina Mexican Grill – by Peter Behle

In Short
The focus is on familiar Mexican specialties at this clean and bright lunch spot. Head up to the counter, after consulting the menu on the wall. Meat fillings to choose from include carne asada (steak), al pastor (pork) and chicken for tacos and burritos, as well as tortas--a sandwich with beans, tomatoes and cheese. Note that burritos are stuffed with meat, lettuce and tomatoes, but no rice or beans. If you're staying, complimentary chips and hot sauce are served.

Insider Tips

When to Go

Like most Loop-area lunch spots, this place has a line from about 11:30am-1pm. But the line does move quickly and tables are often available, since most customers get their lunch to go.

This place has been battling health code violations throughout the past year and has only recently returned from suspension after having just passed inspection. I don't think it's worth the hygienic risk personally.

If you want mediocre, not-so-authentic, standard burritos and tacos, this place is for you. I'm not a particular fan of Chipotle's or Q'doba's watered down flavor, but what they've got is cheaper and tastier than La Cocina Mexican Grill. Major flavor disappointment here...and I gave it three separate tries because some friends and people I work with insisted on trying it! Oh, and I normally I don't really care about service in a Mexican place as long as the food's good, but the second time I went to this little place a large group of what appeared to be unfortunate coworkers wandered in and the manager asked my girlfriend and I to vacate the premises to make room! We hadn't even finished our food yet!

Pros: well lit, good music

Cons: the food was not appetizing and the service was rude
