Delicious!. I don't care how small the place is, the pannenkoeken is amazing! The dutch- style pancakes are the perfect size and flavor. You leave with a satisfied tummy, not so stuffed that you need to be rolled out! I love this place.
Tasty food that's also a good value..
I lived in Lincoln Square for a year and hadn't even noticed this restuarant for the majority of the time I was living there. However I happened to catch the restaurant being featured on the local ABC station's 11am newscast one day. When I found out it was only 4 blocks from my apartment, I headed over to give it a try. I had to order the Chocolate & Banana Pannenkoeken as that seemed to be the "classic" dish for the restaurant. It was wonderful! Great tasting chocolate that isn't either overwhelming or underwhelming. Bananas that are the perfect texture & ripeness. Tasty little toasted hazzlenuts. Yummy whip cream. And a perfectly prepared crepe-like pancake (the pannenkoeken itselft). Such a great combination! I did have to spend a few moments thinking over the best way to eat the pannenkoeken. It's definitely large and the edges of it actually hang over the edge of the plate. But you're definitely getting your money's worth. Yum!
I now live in Lakeview, but I still head over to Lincoln Square to enjoy the restaurant. In fact I think I may head over there sometime in the next couple of days. I generally try to go on a weekday morning or afternoon as opposed to the weekend. Unless you're willing to wait a long time for a table, it's best to avoid weekends there. The restauarant is smaller than you can imagine. Think of the smallest restaurant you've ever been in and cut it in half... that's the Pannenkoeken Cafe. Now I love small intimate restaurants, but this is a little more of an extreme than I prefer. But that's my only complaint. I love this restaurant!
Try their spectacular chocolate banana pancake. There are a lot of breakfast places around but this place is special. At 8:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning, it was packed with people waiting off and on for a table the whole time we were there. Since I love pancakes, I was ecstatic to see a chocolate banana pancake and an apple pancake on the menu. The pancake was light and delicious with crispy golden edges. Fresh bananas graced the top along with drizzled chocolate. I was totally in heaven. My husband had his regular eggs, sausage and hash browns; one of our friends had the apple pancake and the other had the hearty pancake. We will definitely come back. I intend to try everything on the menu. Service was warm and friendly and the coffee kept comin!!!
The biggest thing about this miniscule Lincoln Square spot are the namesake pancakes..
In Short
The miss-able storefront along Western is just behind the quaint Lincoln Square strip--a pity, as Western is busy. Things improve inside, where pea-green and eggshell yellow are accented by blond wood and glass pendant lamps. A handful of tables seat a dozen or so people-and that's packed. Most order the big, floppy, plate-filling flapjacks, two of which are fruit, one savory. Waffles and omelets fill out the remainder of the menu.
