Go Back in Time. In the interest of full disclosure, my visit to this Halo establishment took place at least four years ago during a business trip. While I agree with one reviewer that the dark waiting room was a bit creepy, especially with one other guy in there, I came for the shave experience and was not disappointed. With many shops today using flimsy so-called barber chairs, I was treated to a true old fashioned shave experience fully reclined in their vintage barber chair that dates back to the mid-1900s. The female barber was skilled and did a nice shave with no nicks but she did wear latex gloves during the shave, which was a slight turnoff with the latex smell constantly in the air. Not sure if she is still there but I would go back to Halo for another shave if my travels take me back to Chicago.
Do yourself a favor....
I came here thinking that I would have a unique experience. It was more like a nightmare.
I arrived and was greeted as though my call earlier didn't register an appointment.
Two women looked me over (probably assesing the tip advantage) and walked away.
I was ushered into a dark room with a large plasma tv. It reminded me of the setup some stoner friends had in their basement as a kid.
The haircut was a disastor, the stylist either had a bad cold or was on something. She definately needed to learn the art of conversation.
Afterward, no one even noticed that I got a haircut.
I did leave a decent tip, I figured the stylist needed it.
I was paying my way out of there.
Primping takes on a masculine tone at this king of salons in the Gold Coast..
In Short
If it weren't for the vintage barber chair, this might be your boyfriend's apartment with its flatscreens, guy-oriented reading materials and Wii gaming system station--precisely the comfortable vibe owner Robert Patrizi wanted to create. Taking the girliness out of grooming, the spa shares signature services made popular at its Lakeview and Bucktown brothers; The Man, a combo of a haircut, scalp massage, hot towel and facial toner, ends with what else, a beverage.
