(Photo by Jasmin Shah) – In Short – Two personable sisters oversee operations at this romantically lit, azure-walled storefront frequented by foodies. Couples engrossed in conversation dive into pastichio served in individual glass dishes. Meanwhile, groups pass flavorful, charred loukaniko sausage and gigandes, massive butter beans in kalamata sauce. Souvlaki, chicken reganate fresh-made spanakopita appeases by-the-books diners.

A real review from someone in the neighborhood

by danm900

Disregarding their terrible choice of slogans, we walked over to this Ravenswood neighborhood restaurant tonight. We were greeted promptly by an extremely charming Greek woman who I assume was one of the two owners. Without a reservation on a Friday night we were seated promptly by our lovely hostess to a well set table. This is a BYOB place and we were lucky to find an awesome '05 Franciscan Merlot at the corner store on Wolcott & Montrose for about $20 -so we had that going for us.

Upon close observation it seems there was one really good waitress, and one clueless waiter. We got the waiter. He was totally incompetent. We saw a help wanted sign outside, so that may be cleared up by now. The food was remarkably good. Being at a Greek establishment I chose a lamb dish and it arrived delicious and very balanced in acidity. I thought it would be a typical small wrack of lamb, but it was larger and turkey-leg-like. Again, it was really good. The atmosphere was surprisingly fun. The place is divided into two smallish connected rooms that seemed to have been recently renovated.

Given the charm of the hostess and the delicious food, the experience far exceeded our expectations. However, as I would recommend this place to anyone in the neighborhood, it should not be confused with a 4-5 star restaurant that "foodies" are attracted to. I wouldn't choose the word "best" to describe anything about Mythos on Montrose. Many Chicago restaurants far exceed this charming neighborhood venue.

  • Pros: Good greek food in an area devoid of good Greek food
  • Cons: Empty on weeknights, service can be dodgy

Best Greek Restaurant in Chicago!

by chicagogreek

The best Greek restaurant in Chicago, as far as food and personality goes, is not in Greektown at all... it's MYTHOS! My favorite things on the menu are the Chicken Reganate and the Lamb Chops... they're absolutely delicious. I'm usually very picky about Greek food, being a Greek myself and being accustomed to my mother's cooking, and yet Toni and Vaso (a.k.a. Vicky) totally pull it off, with their great tasting food and warm rapport with their guests. Exoun to pio nostimo elliniko fai tou Sikago! ([in Greek] "They have Chicago's tastiest Greek food!"). If you like or love Greek food, or simply want to try it for the first time, you definitely need to go to MYTHOS! Also, although it's not a Greek dessert, Mythos has _THE BEST_ Tres Leches cake I've ever tasted... I get it every time I visit! After coming to Mythos, you'll never go back to Greektown. We love Mythos (could you tell from my enthusiasm? ;-) ) and we eat there 2-3 times per week; we're big fans (Mythos is about a 5-minute walk west of the Brown Line's Montrose Station; it's on Montrose Avenue, in-between Damen and Lincoln, on the north side of the street... the neighborhood is sometimes referred to as Ravenswood or Northcenter, and it's also very close to Lincoln Square).

  • Pros: Toni and Vaso (a.k.a. Vicky) are amazing hosts!
  • Cons: Avoid if you don't like friendly Greeks, but who doesn't?
