This bar is all about the scene - and the amazing view. Be prepared to drop a little money, as a space like this doesn't come cheap.
cool but not pretentious.
Center of the city with Quartinos next door, pops for champagne, the Joint, Kerryman around the corner, Cresendo, Vision, Excaliber, Cuvee all nearby
Middle of the road with about $10 a drink prices
great mixed crowd having fun and checkin eeach other out
great DJ's even though I havent heard of them but at least it didnt cost me to get in.
the outdoor patio was open and its winter. I espeically liked the red robes and fire pit out there. The waitress told me to come back next month for an outdoor ICE BAR. Ill be back for sure
The other reviewer is right, its HORRIBLE! I went yesterday and aside from the bar being really a small service bar only, the service there is AWFUL! They treat you very badly there, like they are doing you a favor by letting you go in!
If you want to go somewhere where you can have a nice drink, thats not served in a test tube, then go somewhere else!
Horrible Horrible Place.
This place is absolutely HORRIBLE! I have been here several times now, but last night was the final straw.
First off, there are so many better lounges to go (I personally think ROOF at theWit hotel is infinitely better), but I ended up here because a friend of mine had chosen it as the venue of her going away party.
So, last night, I arrive at Vertigo with a group of 4 friends at approximately 11:00 pm. We find a line outside the Dana Hotel and decide, since it's a nice enough night, to wait in line. Bad move! We spend about an hour waiting before we finally reach the front of the line, only to have the bouncer inform us (ever so nicely) that our particular event had magically reached capacity and that we would have to "wait awhile" before we could go in. Our other option, which this bouncer had no qualms about freely conveying, was to give him $20/head.
As we stood there mulling this decision, we saw group after group approach this bouncer and be ushered in without question. It was actually quite humiliating to have waited in line so long, to be told that to our face, and then have basically everyone and their sister approach the bouncer, out of line, and be let in without hesitation.
Now I am the last one to play the race card, but I strongly suspect that part of the reason that this particular "party" had somehow reached capacity was because we did not fit the core white demographic that this establishment was trying to attract.
Regardless of whether this was race-related or not, I was disgusted with the treatment I received at Vertigo and would not suggest it to my worst enemy.
Having been to place before, I can say that it really isn't worth going even if you don't have to wait in line. It is really quite dark -- to the point of being severely off-putting -- and not conducive to walking around and mingling freely. The music leaves a lot to be desired, and service is especially slow.
Citysearch Editorial Review. Nestled high up above the street on the 26th floor of the Dana Hotel, this swanky rooftop lounge is the place to be and be seen--especially during the summer months. If the penthouse views of the decadent Chicago skyline don’t get you in the mood to party, the scantily-clad waitresses (who wheel around drink carts while dressed in catsuits, by the way) and a crowd dressed to impress will have you hankering for a cocktail. Oh, and did we mention the outdoor terrace is covered in Astroturf? Just don’t forget your sunglasses, you’ll be blinded by the sunset--and the beautiful people who come to hang--when you’re perched on this rooftop.
