Italian food inside the Art Institute's Modern Wing..
On the top floor of architect Renzo Piano's airy addition, Spiaggia chef Tony Mantuano gives the art a run for its money with a lunch-only menu of sandwiches, pastas, salads and entrees, made with ingredients from regional farms. The pristine, white room, flooded with light from three walls of windows, fills with the murmur of lunching ladies and art-lovers indulging in flatbreads like one with tomato, burrata cheese, basil and garlic scapes or handmade spaghetti with porcini mushrooms and house-made lemon ricotta. If the view of Lake Michigan isn't a sweet enough end to the meal, there's chocolate semifreddo with salted caramel.
