Chilam Balam, best BYOB Mexican restaurant. The atmosphere was friendly and cozy. We were a group of 10, all from different backgrounds, expecting to try the common Mexican tacos or quesadillas. To our surprise, the menu was very diverse, with a hint of elegance in each dish.

Since we were a big group we decided to try the small tapas and share one big plate. My favourite ones were the crispy flautas and the empanadas filled with braised mushrooms. The salad was delicious, too. The big plate was some delicious white meat fish that I cannot remember the name but was just cooked to perfection.

Def a place to bring a date, big parties, or for a girls night out. The service was friendly and on time to take your order and bring the food. The owner was there to greet us and tell us a little bit about the restaurant and its organic, sustainable products.

I'm coming back again!

Subterranean BYOB den of seasonal Mexican in Lakeview.. A young Frontera Grill vet with a locally and sustainably minded culinary mission is behind this cheerful, sub-street-level Mexican BYOB. Fresh, locally grown produce and locally raised meats shine in share-friendly small plates like grilled pork ribs basted with sweet Oaxacan pasilla chile glaze and a grilled corn and summer squash quesadilla with the Mexican herb epazote. The tiny dining room is an explosion of color, from striped throw pillows and glowing, star-shaped lamps hanging from the ceiling to hand-painted Mexican tiles and folk art on the vibrantly painted walls. The eager-to-please waitstaff is so sunny, it's easy to forget you're dining in a basement.
