What Our Expert Scouts Are Saying

The Fountainhead
Fountainhead has always been known for their extensive beer and whiskey selection, but those in the know have usually avoided the food. No more. Cleetus Friedman, formerly of the dearly departed City Provisions, has packed up his knives, collaboration beers and local food wisdom and decamped a few blocks to Fountainhead. Two weeks in, brunch is already one of the hottest tickets in town. Try homemade bagels, an aquavit bloody mary with an entire stick of charcuterie on top and a thick brunch burger with bacon and eggs on top. Once their beautiful rooftop bar opens, this restaurant will become one of the most desirable destinations in Chicago.

Chef Cleetus Friedman recently breathed new life into the menu at this neighborhood restaurant where the beer selections are killer. Head to the rooftop deck in summer for mushroom risotto, beet salad and a frosty cold one.

Great beer & whisky selection. The food is superb too. Love the monkey bread.

Great beer selection, mussels and Mac. Great beer selection and mussels make this a solid neighborhood resto.

The best whiskey list on the far north side. I'd stay away on weekend nights, since it gets full, but stop in on weekdays. During the summer, they have a great rooftop deck.

Love this place in the Winter or on a cold day. Try the monkey bread - this version's stuffed with homemade fennel sausage and comes with a sharp cheese sauce. Calorie-free.

Fabulous craft beer list, but the real draw is the gorgeous, sprawling rooftop bar. Great grub to snack on too (try the monkey bread).

seems like a good beer selection if you can actually get one. Four of us showed up at Fountainhead last night. Granted, it was a Friday night and it was pretty crowded.

I was first to arrive walked up and waited at the bar for five minutes and it appeared that there was only one tall guy with a beard hustling his ass off to serve the whole bar.

I get a text that the other three would be arriving shortly and I decide to wait for them and get the first round.

The rest of my party arrives, so I go back to the bar to place our order. Another lengthy wait and then another bartender shows up and proceeds for the next 5 minutes to dick around trying to find something on the television while all of us at the bar stare in total disbelief. I wait. The couple in front of me says, "screw this!" and were out the door. I wait for five more minutes and I get a text from "the group" saying "let's get the Hell out of here."

So I gladly left the bar and we headed out the door to go grab some excellent food at Sheffields which also has a better beer list than fountainhead.

I actually went back into the bar to talk to the blonde at the door to explain why 6 people just walked out of the bar. She just smiled and said, "okay!"

I hope this place closes. Unbelievable poor service and attitude!

Fountainhead. Impressive drink selection is an understatement! A wonderful environment as well. I had a few stellar beers along with a burger that was cooked to excellence! I highly recommend!

Citysearch Editorial Review. If an impressive drink selection is of utmost importance, this Ravenswood establishment won’t disappoint. The comprehensive beverage list features beer, wine and whiskeys from all over the world, in addition to craft beers from local and regional distilleries. Simple dark mahogany wood enriches the casual environment, and a mix of after-work locals and those looking for a sophisticated whiskey and bite fill the space. The menu, a compilation of large, shareable plates like smoked mac and cheese with pale ale cheese, was created to compliment the cocktails.
