What Our Expert Scouts Are Saying

Carriage House
Chicagoans aren't exactly experts on Southern Food; forgive us, we've got deep dish pizza and catsup-free hot dogs to keep track of! But that means that we're always pleasantly surprised when we discover something new, like Chef Mark Steuer's latest take on "low country" cuisine at Carriage House. Step from hip Wicker Park into a ramped up version of the old south, with wrought iron fixtures and some damn good shrimp and grits. This isn't your standard "southern" soul food - Charleston specialities like She-Crab soup and a low country seafood boil with sausages and corn on the cob set this place apart. The pickles (and pickled eggs) are homemade, the cocktails are craft and the cornbread comes in its own tiny skillet. Come hungry.

Southern fare has never looked better. Go big and meaty and make sure to get some grits on your plate. Craft cocktails aren't to be missed. Brunch is also stellar- try the decadent and tender French toast.

Lovely spot for dinner or brunch—the fried green tomatoes topped with an egg are delicious, and the grits are a must-order. Try the crab soup as well. If you sit on the porch in the winter, a plaid blanket on the back of each chair will keep you warm and cozy.

Delicious cocktails by acclaimed mixologist Michael Simon. Love Mark Steuer's crusty bottom cornbread and new take on low country boil with shrimp and rabbit. Great for groups looking to share.

Loving the celery-infused cocktail trend, namely the low-country gin gimlet with celery bitters and sweet pearl onion vermouth at Carriage House...just the right amount of booze and savory bite.

I didn't know what low country southern food was until I went here. Wonderful seafood, great cocktails.
