In Short – Go early to avoid a wait at this diner, where a mix of Boys Town regulars fill two large rooms to sample dishes like red-salmon salad and hot Reuben sandwiches. The cinnamon rolls are dense squares of cinnamon-spiraled dough. The Swedish Sampler features roast duck, lingonberry glaze, meatballs, potato-sausage dumpling, sauerkraut, brown beans and sides like pickled beets and applesauce.

Awesome breakfast - try a cinnamon roll!

by christycumbo at Citysearch

5 stars for the cinnamon rolls, they are awesome. I go here probably 3 times a month for breakfast on Sunday and have always had amazing cinnamon rolls. I could eat a bowl of the icing they put on them by itself. The rest of breakfast is really good, though I tend to stick with the Swedish pancakes. There are really good deals on lunch and dinner too.

The owner makes the experience

by tinish at Citysearch

I'd been to Ann Sathers in Lakeview several times over the last few months and really thought that I'd found my regular, favorite breakfast restaurant. The food is good, the service is quick and the wait staff is generally friendly. The new location is lovely, although the tables are crowded together, and my friend and I visited it last Sunday. We were seated right next to the kitchen, amidst all the bustle. Our server, who was great as usual, brought our meals; but my hollandaise sauce, served in a plastic cup, was ice cold as if it was just pulled from the fridge. When I asked to have it heated, the server took it back and the response from the kitchen was "Tell this customer to go to another restaurant" (but I did receive the sauce, piping hot and served in a large bowl). Apparently, it was the owner who was upset that I had the nerve to request that my food actually be warm. So, really, whom could I possibly complain to if the owner doesn't even care about the quality of his guests' experience? I am not interested in giving my money to an owner who explicitly insults his guests, even if he thinks they can?t hear him.

  • Pros: Good wait and bus staff
  • Cons: Rude owner

I wish I could recommend this place.

The cinnamon buns were delicious and the bacon was perfect. The waiter was even really attentive... but NEVER give these guys your credit card!

The shenanigans began when they gave me the bill. I gave them my credit card and waited for a good ten minutes for the waiter to return. He comes back handing me the wrong bill and the wrong card. I correct his mistake and he goes back. Another ten minutes later, he comes back with THE SAME WRONG CARD in his hand. I point this out again. He leaves again. At this point my friend and I are thinking "Man, this guy must be having a rough day." We waited a few more minutes until he returned again. This time he had the right card in his hand, but the wrong bill. I was astonished at the circus act this had become. He left again to correct his mistake and came back with the right card and the right bill. I payed it and left. (And only a half hour after finishing my meal. Nice.)

So later that day I check my bank balance and it reads that I have $60 less than what I started with. Yup, they triple charged me. Days later, after calls back and forth to the restaurant and my bank, the money is still missing from my bank account.

All in all, the place has good food but they are monkeys when it comes to handling a credit card.

  • Pros: good food, cinnamon buns
  • Cons: Management, using credit cards, long waits

are you desperate for a hyped-to-be-homely disappointment?

by deezdog at Citysearch

yeah yeah cinnamon rolls. if that's all you want for breakfast then go ahead. but if you are eating out for something more consider this when choosing:

ITS NOT HOLLANDAISE!

if you are ordering one of their eggs benedict variations that come with "hollandaise sauce" don't be expecting a thick delicious sauce with a bit of flavor. hollandaise is an emulsion (heated and mixed slowly) of butter, egg yoke, and lemon or vinegar and seasoned. it is delicate and somewhat difficult which is why many restaurants only have it on some days.

ann sathers "hollandaise" is raw egg yoke with melted butter added. that's it. and that is not a hollandaise. it's flavorless and cheating the customer.

so plan on ordering an overcooked omelet instead.

  • Pros: sugar with cinnamon rolls
  • Cons: anything with eggs

Try it for Dinner

by pjs2780 at Citysearch

This place is great for dinner! For one price, you get an assortment of breads (including the famous Ann Sather cinnamon rolls), an appetizer (the fruit soup is yummy!), an entree (the filet mignon, Swedish meatballs, and sweet potato gnocchi are all killer), two sides, and a dessert (pies, ice cream sundaes, brownies a la mode)! The servers are all super friendly and the atmosphere is great -- and terrific for people watching because such a wide variety of people are there! So, have breakfast at Orange or something, and visit Ann Sather for a more savory meal later in the day.
