don't go here

by JFriedlander at Citysearch

I went there this evening with a large group. The waitress not once ask me what I wanted to drink I had to walk up to the bar (keep in mind this was during the dinner portion of the evening). The food was good however what I ordered is not what I received. I ordered a burger, no cheese, no bacon, medium, with onions; not only did the waitress forget to put my order in (I didn't receive it until 10 min after the table received their food) but I got a burger, rare extra bacon, with cheese and no onions. After receiving a late wrong order the waitress not once ask me if the food was OK (however she did chat with my friends while she watched me pick off the bacon and cheese). After this we moved to a table in the back, despite having a new waitress they managed to mess up my drink order several times. Once I ordered a Alpha King, and initially received what looked like a bud lite. The second time the waitress did not stop b the table for well over a half an hour and I went to the bar to order my drinks. When the waitress saw that I had ordered a drink at the bar she was hostile towards the table. I will never go to this place again. Bad food, worse service, and overpriced.

  • Pros: good beer list for a wine bar

Ripping off their customers

by andrewthak at Citysearch

We've been coming to 404/Jack's for years and unfortunately won't go back again. A week ago we ordered a wine that we knew well and they poured something completely different. We complained and they said we got what we ordered. We complained to the manager and she wouldn't rectify the situation. We went back again a week later and the same thing happened and the food was awful. What a shame -- used to be a great place before they started taking advantage.

Do not go and do not have a party there!

by jlajlf at Citysearch

They advertise themselves as unpretentious layed back place, this place is anything but that. Do not go here and do not have a party here! I tried to book a 30th birthday party for my friend and two managers were extremely rude and one even hung up on me.

The manager accused me of not wanting to pay the room fee, which I had no problem doing. She also told me they had a minimum of 35 people when the website says a 30 person minimum. They changed their mind in the middle of the conversation and said she just decided not to do parties on Fridays or Saturdays. They also said we will not do a party at 9pm when I suggested that time. They were very rude and condenscending.

  • Pros: good wine
  • Cons: very rude staff, very rude managers, not accomodating for parties

Perfect for your 1st or 100th date

by paigeveronica at Citysearch

My boyfriend and I came for Sweetest Day and had a fabulous time sitting at a two-top drinking an amazing bottle of Pinot Grigio and snacking on gormet pizzas. Our conversation quickly changed to beating each other in a game of Scattagories and Guess Who? Loved the relaxing, romantic atmosphere that is more masculine than some of the other wine bars we've been too. Could have done without the couple at the bar making out, but hey, it happens.

Go someplace else.

by johntom at Citysearch

This "wine bar" is more bar that anything. Don't expect much from this place. To start off, its not its own bar, its a room of Jack's Bar and Grill. The atmosphere is closer to that of Alumni Club or Mothers rather than Loungey Wine Bar. Their wine selection is nothing to brag about. But, the worst thing about this place is the service. The whole "get close and personal with the bartender at the bar" is a bunch of BS. Neither the staff or the owner treated us well. They were all EXTREMELY rude. I've been treated better at a McDonalds. If your looking for good wine bar, this would not be it. (Be sure to look at the reviews for Jack's Bar and Grill, since is basically the same place)

  • Pros: It closes at 2am
  • Cons: This place is still running

Great spot!

by mdostal at Citysearch

Instead of shopping the day after Thanksgiving we found this spot. We got there early enough to get the couches right in front of the fireplace and it was the perfect evening to relax and socialize. Wine selection and appetizers were great. Staff was friendly and energetic, but maybe could have been a little more knowledgable about the vino. The closer to the bar next door you are the louder it is.

  • Pros: Atmosphere, Menu
  • Cons: Noisy

Comfortable place to sip and schmooze over a bottle or two.

by Contributor at Citysearch

The Scene
Once you make it through Jack's Bar and Grill next door, you're home free. Though they're connected (and share a bathroom), Jack's and 404 have distinctly different clientele; the latter's neighborhood folks and area 30-somethings are a bit more polished than the former's tavern regulars. That said, 404 lacks the typical pretentions of wine bars outside of Europe, so patrons truly enjoy wine and conversation above a pop-jazz soundtrack. In the summer, the back room opens onto a pleasant walled garden; a fireplace keeps things cozy during cooler seasons.

The Draw
Wine prices are reasonable and the majority of selections come from California and France. Ports, cognacs, brandies and single malts are also available. A small food menu includes appetizers that go with wine, like pizzas, caramelized Brie and bruschetta, though more items are available from Jack's bar-food heavy menu.

Nice and romantic

by nathanstull_citysearch at Citysearch

In the winter, the fireplace is roaring. I like the atmosphere here a lot and the food is good. I had the baked bree and also a four cheese pizza. Top that off with a bottle of Merlot and you have a solid date.
