Chicago's mammoth concrete palace of commerce.

The Building
The Merchandise Mart is so big it has its own zip code and el stop. It covers two entire city blocks, rises 25 stories and, at 4.2 million square feet, is the world's largest commercial building. On the south drive is the Mart's Hall of Fame--eight bronze busts of renowned American businessmen, including Marshall Field, who had the Mart built in 1930.
The Skinny
The Mart is home to more than 600 permanent showrooms displaying the latest in home and commercial furnishings. The first two floors is a mall called Shops at the Mart, with clothing stores, card and gift shops, Starbucks, a food court and more. The rest of the mart is closed to the public, except for the showrooms on the 13th floor, which specialize in kitchen and bathroom products, and can be visited by appointment. Rumor has it that the Sultan of Brunei went on a $1.6 million shopping spree at the Mart to furnish his 60-room palace.
Huge building

It's pretty impressive the size of this building. I kind of wish there were more stores inside, but that's OK. The El stop here is easy to get to and right next to an extensive food court.
pretty building
by jameswevley_citysearch at Citysearch
The Merchandise Mart is deceptively huge. Visitors will enjoy the design of the building; shoppers and design fans can purchase items from several notable firms in town. Want a cookie while you explore? Avoid the pretty generic food court on the 2nd floor and Head to Au Bon Pain downstairs. Their oatmeal raisin are the best.
