Forget This Place!

This is not the restaurant of years ago. The hamburger is plain and dull. If this place rates at 10 for food, then McDonald's has a rating off the scale.

After we saw Hackney's On Harm on the Food Channel, we decided to try it on our next visit.
If you are looking for flash and glitz, keep driving, Chicago is full of over priced places.
If you are looking for absolutly fantastic burgers, steaks, onion loafs, etc., then take the time to print out a map and take the time to find them. We have been back many times over the years, and always look forward to our next visit before even leaving the diner table. The prime rib is worth the drive all by itself!
Even if you are not a big fan of Key Lime Pie, you've got to try theirs which is fantastic!
Everyone from Grandma and Grandpa to the smallest grandkids are welcome. Portions tend to be on the large size so if you leave hungry, don't blame them. Service is excellent, even on a Saturday night but expect to wait.
- Pros: Melt In Your Mouth Burgers
- Cons: Too Far Away to Visit Weekly

Hackney's on Harms features the usual excellent burgers on rye and onion loaves, but the real draw of this particular location is the big, sprawling patio. It's a very old-fashioned feel, but I happen to like it. I have really fond memories of coming here with my grandparents when I was little, and I still like to come here with my parents and cousins on a beautiful summer day. A great place to take kids--they'll like the food, and there's a little outdoor playhouse so they won't get too bored waiting for it.

Hackneys is a great place for a good old-fashioned burger. They have pretty good onion rings and the portion is huge. The burgers are flavorful and I only add some ketchup and mustard. The service really isn't the greatest. It's usally an older crowd but it's definitely worth trying!

This particular Hackneys has a great old-fashioned bar atmosphere. The burgers, served on the traditional dark rye, are the best in the area. The onion strings are also to die for. I absolutely love this place. It's a Chicago-area institution that's been here forever for good reason.
PROS: Great food and drink
CONS: You might miss it driving by on Harms so pay attention
One bite of the Hackneyburger, and you'll know why this 60-year-old suburban joint is a local landmark.

In Short
An area staple since 1939, Hackney's elevates the hamburger into an art form: Big, meaty and tucked into a bun or two slices of dark rye, and topped with American, Swiss, cheddar or blue cheese. The brick-like, deep-fried Spanish onion loaf is addictive and perfect for sharing; butt steak, ribs and chicken are other options. For dessert, choose from cherry, Key lime or Snickers ice cream pie.

Sorry you had a bad experiance.
Our family has enjoyed many visits over the years. The burgers we have had were cooked as we asked: Medium rare on black rye with grilled onion. My mother in law had fish which was butter tender inside and crispy outside with a ton of flavor. I have had their prime rib which was out of this world.
Suggest giving them another try, and explain that your last visit was not great. Their service has always been fantastic for us, even with kids.
