Buyer beware- GOLANS MOVING!!!!
I had the worst experience with Golan's moving company. They charged me extra for moving insurance and when they damaged my new 400.00 table they prolonged a 6 month "investigation" resulting in a "take it or leave it" 50.00 "release of liabilty". Golan's has been nothing but short and rude when iT came to resolving my issue.
- Pros: none
- Cons: damaged furniture
Never again
by kelly103 at Citysearch
I have used Golan's twice but after my last experience I will never use them again and will warn anyone away from using them. They quoted me a price of $400-$500 to move the furniture from my one bedroom from one side of Lakeview to the other. Once they had all of my things on the truck, I was informed that the cost would actually be $750 and that I needed to give them a credit card to pay or else they would not unload my things. They threatened to take my stuff and put int in storgage, with me being billed for the storage, until I paid their inflated price. When I called the office to complain, I was told the longer I argued the more the move would cost me because the movers were hourly. I ended up paying the bill so that they would unload my truck. And then promptly reported them to the B B B and the state's consumer protection agency. Golan's did give me a refund once I got the B B B involved. DO NOT USE GOLANS. DISHONEST, POORLY RUN COMPANY.
- Pros: gave me a refund once I contacted the B B B
- Cons: do not honor the quote, slow, dishonest
Barefoot movers, crushed and wet boxes
by mgoh at Citysearch
Golan's is awful. We moved from Chicago to Washington DC and 5 of our boxes arrived wet. WET! How do boxes that are supposed to be on a truck arrive wet? Customer service was at Golan's was very hands off after pickup; I was emailed a link describing the process of how to file a claim. No personal contact whatsoever. Also, to file a claim with Golan's you have to use a third party company.
When the movers arrived -- several hours late -- they barely spoke english. One was barefoot. Several of our items, in addition to water damage, were broken or missing. The movers accidentally left a shipping schedule of all the deliveries they were making on their trip, and it turned out our stuff had traveled from Chicago to Georgia to Florida to South Carolina and to North Carolina before showing up in DC. I'm guessing that's what helps them keep costs low, but also contributed to the crushed, wet boxes that held our belongings.
- Pros: Seemed cheap but reasonable. Customer service was good at beginning
- Cons: Significant damage. Poor scheduling. Customer service was hands-off and unconcerned once they had our stuff.
Slow movers, huge price diffrence.

Be careful, you get one price when they come to do an estimate and it will change on the day of the move.
They estimated my move at $850 and the final cost came to be over $1300.
Not a good business practice, I would not use them again.
Rude consultant (Matthew Kischuk) - eager to help, poor customer service skills when canceling
by asahi7777777 at Citysearch
I had a moving moving consultant named Matthew Kischuk, who was rude and sarcastic. I sent an email saying I was shopping around and had found a better rate with another company, and he replies "Well I wonder why their rates are lower. Good luck your reservation has been canceled."
Now I'm really glad I'm getting a different mover instead of doing business with this moron.
Best movers I've ever had
by mendoza969 at Citysearch
I've used 4 movers in the past 5 years, and Golan is BY FAR the best. They called before they came, arrived when they said they would, and were very polite and professional. Like most movers, they charge by the hour, but they are EXTREMELY FAST at loading up the moving truck. Before I could blink my eyes, half of my furniture was already loaded. They are very very fast. They are also extremely careful with my furniture, and this is the first time that nothing was broken. In the past, movers have broken things like a mirror or a chair, but Golan did not break a thing. They had to carry my heavy furniture up three flights of stairs, and they never complained once. I asked them if they wanted to stop the clock and take a break, but they said no. They are also very reasonably priced. They charge for 3 guys what other places charge for 2 guys. Overall, they were very professional, polite, and fast. They are the best movers I've ever had.
- Pros: Reasonably priced, FAST, professional, polite, careful with furniture
Does not live up to previous reputation; tries to cheat customers out of valid claims
by Windyone at Citysearch
I paid Golan's to move me cross-country from Chicago. This included insurance coverage of $60,000 with a $500 deductible. They damaged and/or lost a lot (about 10%) of my boxes and pieces of furniture. This negligence included refusing to crate items, taping to bare wood, smashing boxes, ripping shelves out of bookcases, destroying patio goods and hiding damages. They initially *admitted* their negligence. I have spent 3 months filing claims with Golan's, providing photos, details, etc. Now they won't pay to repair or replace all these broken and lost items.
This is a big difference from my experiences with them for local moves, when they were good. I don't know if things have changed or what, but, I would urge others to be very careful.
- Pros: Showed up, used own truck
- Cons: Broke items, lost items, will not honor insurance contract
Worst customer service and terrible company
by erinlanoue at Citysearch
I have had a terrible experience. The movers destroyed 2 items, and $850 table and a $300 wine fridge. The claims analyst is not friendly and deemed that my items are worth $60, I bought $5000 worth of insurance on move day. I would never recommend Golan's to anyone. Terrible company to deal with.
- Cons: broken furniture, rude customer service, unresponsive
WORST MOVERS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by mwchicago at Citysearch
This was by far the WORST moving experience I have ever had. I move a lot and these movers milked the clock BIG TIME. It took them 5 hours to move a 1 bedroom apartment a 1/2 mile. I had to chip in and help to try and save myself some money. I have filed a complaint with the management but of course have gotten no where with them. I am noticing damage to several pieces of furniture but at this point I feel there is no point in trying to get anything from this company. This company is TERRIBLE and I would NEVER recommend anyone use them.
- Pros: they showed up
- Cons: everything after them showing up was a DISASTER
