BEST Southern Food in Chicagoland
by MsTexas at Citysearch
I LOVE THIS PLACE! I'm from Texas and when I need good southern, homecooking I head to Evanston. The fried okra reminds me of moms (shhh, don't tell her). The biscuits and gravy are a must for brunch...seriously, I can't say enough about how good they are. Love the fried catfish (would throw some black pepper and canjun spice in the mix)...but it is really good. Love the fried chicken...I think you see the pattern here for fried! The service is great, but I do miss the chicory coffee...bring iti back! Def my favorite place for southern and soul food!
- Pros: FRIED OKRA!, great service, parking
- Cons: sometimes there are too many kids,
Good service & Tasty Food!

There's nothing like sitting down at a restaurant and getting warm mini corn-pancakes in the bread basket. They've got crazy flavorful Jamaican chicken wings and huge salads. Sadly, I was a little dissappointed with their cornbread though...dry and didn't have a strong corn flavor. :( Decent prices though!
Neighborhood families and Northwestern students visit this busy Southern spot for down home dishes.

In Short
Zydeco music plays as college students and Evanstonians relax at checkered vinyl tablecloth-topped tables amidst hutches of colorful dishes, vintage product containers and advertising memorabilia. The Southern delta cooking includes cornmeal johnnycakes with honey butter; spicy barbecued shrimp; and hot, juicy, cornmeal-crusted oysters. There's also a Southern sampler that features jambalaya, gumbo, and red beans and rice. For dessert, pecan pie is a crowd-pleaser.
My favorite eats in Evanston

I've been to Dixie Kitchen about six times now and must say I love this place. Everything from the cornbread pancakes to the jumbalaya to the fried chicken is outstanding and very reasonably priced. This isn't the place to go if you want to eat healthy, but if you want food that tastes great, this is the place.
- Pros: great food, inexpensive, good menu variety
- Cons: kinda small
Food is not worth long wait
by dulasevi at Citysearch
I have been to the Dixie Kitchen on two occassions. Both times we had to wait between 45-60 minutes for a table. There is no where is sit and wait either. Everyone just crowds around the door. The food is so-so. The muffins are dry, and in my experience the vegetables have always been overcooked. The portions are large, but rather tasteless. However, there are several items on the menu, like the gumbo, that were worth a return trip. The service has also been average.
- Cons: Parking, No Reservations
Just not very good.

Tried this place after hearing many good things, including reviews here. The experience was quite bad. The breading on our fried green tomatoes was almost pure salt, and the tomatoes were served too hot. Our main course, grilled chicken breast, wasn't thoroughly done and was totally devoid of flavor. The cole slaw was dry and flavorless, and the corn was only fair. The corn muffin was good, as were the mashed potatoes and gravy. Our service was bad. I didn't once receive a beverage refill, and despite being seated next to the water station, received a water refill only after we had paid our check! Our waiter was absent. This was VERY disappointing and may be overrated. We left hungry for a real meal, something with flavor. In a city full of good restaurants, you can throw a dart at a map and find a better place.
- Pros: Quick seating, Easy parking
- Cons: Very bad food, Poor service
