Worst Pub on Northshore

by ariesfire

This is the worst place to eat, drink, and just try to be merry! We went to this pub with a 30+ group from work and were seated in the dinning room at 3 seperate tables (with our backs to 1 large table) and as we were talking and laughing we were asked to move our party to their outside patio, just after we all ordered our dinners (this took thier waite staff 45 long minutes to finally place). We moved our party outside to then get carded, and yes we had a few under 21 (not drinking but enjoying the celebration with the rest) but as this was not a problem in the dinning room it somehow became one when we were moved...long story short, we where told that we couldn't go back into the dining room (it had been cleaned quickly...the only thing that was quick by the way), and we could not all sit and eat the meals that we ordered in the area that they had suggestly moved us to, but yet we were expected to pay for all the food and take it to go! They are the most unprofessional and rude pub I have ever been to. There are plenty of bars in Evanston that welcomed our group (and the plethora of money that came with us), and they will welcome yours too...don't waste your time on this place, food is average at best, the drinks take a long time to get, and the manager of this place is unbelieveably unprofessional and rude...it is not worth the long wait time nor the money..go next door to Prairie Moon where they have great food and fast service.

  • Cons: terrible customer service

Lousy Service

by minumula

We went to dinner on one evening and we were seated at a table. The lady comes and says that the other person is your server and he will come and take your order. He never showed up at the table. Finally the other girl who is not the server tried to take our order. Every time we had to order we had to wave at some one to come to the table. At the end of the meal we asked the waiter to call the manager to ask why we were not being served. The manager just comes over and says I would appreciate if you stop being rude to my staff. The only thing we asked the staff was to get us some food and we were not happy with the service so we wanted to speak with the manager. He did not come and ask what the issue was and try to resolve it. He was just rude. I had been to this place, but will never go again

Naperville/Plainfield Location - VERY DISAPPOINTED

by JumpinJBird

OK - we've given this place three tries now....hoping it would get better, as there really are not many pub style places to eat in South Naperville/Plainfield. Wow, we've now been disappointed 3 times. To start, I really can't believe it to be that difficult to make a good burger. This place has over cooked our burger twice....so much for trying again. The appetizers were OK the first time, not soo good the 2nd and 3rd time. The building is great, new....family atmosphere, but so far the food has stunk all three times we tried.....3rd time is not a charm here.

  • Pros: Nice new pub in the South Naperville/Plainfield area - nice building, tvs, etc.
  • Cons: Food stinks

No longer Kid Friendly, Now as Irish as Lucky Charms Cereal

by rrichard

WARNING: Nevins Pub is under new ownership who is not kid friendly. We have been going to Nevins for years, especially when there is live music. The last time we went, the owner rudely told us that "this is not Chuck E Cheese". Now it's just another average bar that serves average burgers.

  • Pros: Fresh Guinness
  • Cons: New Ownership

Great burgers and atmosphere

by darkhawk5

Tommy Nevin's Pub may be one of the best Irish bars in the city. When I was in college, my friends and I would go there almost every night for pints and darts. Highly recommended.

nice casual place

by anne_bender

Who would have thought Irish food would be good? Certainly not me, but everything I had at Tommy Nevin's was great! It's not the nicest restaurant on earth, but the lighting was nice and the food was good so what do you want?

  • Pros: good food, easy parking
  • Cons: can be noisy

Despite the changes, the regulars have stayed.

by kiplog

Nevin's changed drastically, it can no longer be called an Irish Pub, since there aren't anymore Irish people, and TVs interfere with conversation, but it still maintains it's character by maintaining it's regular characters. It feels like Bennigans, but it's still one of the best places to hang with the locals.

There's improvements lately, notably the bartenders. There was a time when you had better luck getting served if you waited out your turn for a beer at another bar. The staff are excellent now, although trying to get served at a table in the pub still takes forever. Another improvement is the glass chiller, in the past, you'd often get served a beer in a hot glass straight from the dishwasher.

The food is okay, and there's some good drink specials, like cheap monday drafts. This place gets unbearably loud on crowded nights because of the tin ceiling.

  • Pros: locals, specials, bartenders
  • Cons: drunk locals, loud when crowded, slow table service

An old-fashioned, good-time Irish bar and restaurant attracts everyone from college carousers to mature couples.

by Contributor

In Short
An Evanston institution, this congenial pub is a favorite among Northwestern students and professors. Opt for communal seating in the pub, complete with roaring fireplace or in the mellow dining room, with forest-green color scheme and soft lighting. The menu spans from steak to fish-and-chips; standouts include shepherd's pie, Irish breakfasts and mussels in Coleman's cream. For dessert, try sticky, satisfying toffee pudding.

This Place is a Joke

by emmi2138

Most of these reveiws are right, ABOUT THE OLD NEVINS TWO YEARS AGO. I like to think I am open minded, so after eeing huge changes I decided i would give it another try. The character filled music venue, gone, televisions everywhere, and worst of all, Servers in plaid miniskirts. Nothing about this place lives up to its traditional irish friendly heritage. Im disgusted. Evanston doesnt want a Irish Sports bar Hooters look a like.

  • Pros: if you want sports
  • Cons: spotty service, terrible food, plaid miniskirts
