Probably the greatest ice cream in the world!!!
by JObrien at Citysearch
Petersen's is in my oppinion the greatest ice cream in the world. It has been a Chicago land and especially an Oak Park/River Forest institution since 1919. Their product is simply much richer and more flavorful than anyone around. Oberweis Dairy is good, but Petersen's blows them away when it comes down to pure taste. Also, a lot of people have said that Homer's in Wilmette is good, however I find their ice cream to be too icy and less creamy than Petersen's. My only complaint is purely cosmetic. The ice cream parlour could use a facelift, but as long as the ice cream is this good, I don't care!
- Pros: Rich, creamy, classic
- Cons: NONE!
Restaurant closed, ice cream overpriced
by lunchbox1 at Citysearch
Petersen's ice cream used to be on par price wise with other ice cream shops like Cold Stone Creamery, Ben & Jerrys, Brown Cow. Now they seem to be trying to make it by charging the folks who come in an arm and a leg! A one-scoop hot fudge sundae was over $6. A family of four can easily spend $15-20 on dessert. Not worth it!
- Pros: Convenient parking
- Cons: Fewer choices, big bucks

Awesome Ice Cream

From a family of picky ice cream people, Petersons is the one place every demands to visit when then come through Chicago! Lucky me, I live within a mile! Great for the whole family. Especially love the hot fudge!
Long-time Oak Park favorite packs in a crowd for dessert and coffeeshop fare.

In Short
Along with the takeout ice cream parlor (no tables), this spot boasts a coffee shop decorated with knickknacks and an in-between space for both dining and dessert. The homemade, 18-percent butterfat ice cream features signature flavors like peanut butter chocolate cup and New York cherry. Other favorites include the enormous banana split with vanilla, strawberry and chocolate ice cream, plus savory fare like meat loaf and stuffed cabbage.
Best Ice Cream around

We have been going here since I was a little girl. The hot fudge sundaes are awesome and for the kids, nothing is better than getting ice cream with an umbrella.. Love the little container of Hot Fudge to put on yourself.
A Difference You Can Taste!
by dragonpride at Citysearch
Peterson's serves utterly smooth and creamy ice cream containing 18% butterfat - you can really taste the difference. With flavors like Cookies 'N Cream, Vanilla Caramel Royal, Mackinac Island Fudge and Peanut Butter Chocolate Cup there is no going wrong, though they tend to skimp on the 'extras'... That's my only gripe. Aside from the cone or dish option, you can choose anything from a thick, rich milk SHAKE to a sundae topped with fudge, a dollop of whipped cream and a cherry. One of my favorites is THE CHOCOLATE TURTLE Sundae - Vanilla ice cream, Chocolate and Caramel toppings with butter-roasted pecans. For those on the go, Peterson's also sell take out pints, quarts and 1/2-gallon tubs of their ice cream.
- Pros: Smooth and creamy, Unique flavors, Can be packed to go
- Cons: Skimp on the extras
Only the best
by Kamden1130 at Citysearch
My family has had 5 generations of members become Peterson Patrons. Although there are many great places around, nothing will curb a pregnancy craving like the turtle sundae. I feel very luck living only blocks from Peterson's & continuing in our family tradition.
- Pros: home made, good value
