This Westmont hole-in-the-wall has served divine homemade chili since 1925.

The Scene
Wood-paneled walls, paisley curtains and glass-block windows meet beer-bar ambience at this cozy neighborhood joint. Chatty locals sidle up to the horseshoe-shaped bar to watch nightly news, while families prefer tables along the dining room's perimeter. No one sports attitude, and service is pleasantly jovial.

The Food
Bishop's sticks to a limited menu of what it knows best: chili, heavy on the ground beef and kidney beans. Go for the chili mac, a mound of tomatoey, kicky chili that hides a heaping helping of chopped spaghetti. For a little extra zest, sprinkle generously with extra toppings like spicy giardiniera, jalapenos, sour cream and cheese, which come on the side in individual plastic containers. Other must-trys: The fresh-baked, crumbly sweet corn muffin doused with hot sauce; a German-style, kraut-topped brat with a side of Fritos; Polish sausage nestled next to chips; and zippy shredded beef tamales--with or without chili.
