Okay, but expected more

by JoyL

We stayed at the Hotel Allegro when going to see Mary Poppins at the connected Cadillac Palace Theater.

Before arriving, I had to call the concierge numerous times to get him to help me find an appropriate restaurant. Eventually booked us a reservation at 312 Chicago, which turned out wonderfully, but he was unaware that the hotel restaurant had a children's menu.

From the moment we stepped out of the car, until we got in to leave, the staff treated my daughter like she was a princess and their job was to cater to her.

I asked for a room on a higher floor and only received an 8th floor room. The outlet in the bathroom didn't work and we had difficulty turning on the shower.

The beds were very comfortable and our stay was short and sweet. I'm not sure I would return to the Hotel Allegro, but I'm not sure I wouldn't either.

  • Pros: Four year old daughter treated like a princess
  • Cons: Some issues with things working as they should

Great location, comfortable beds

by bc3

This was our third stay at a Kimpton, and the hotel chain continues to deliver. Very mod, stylish lobby & hotel room. Great location near the Chicago el.

VERY large room, extremely comfortable bed (we slept until 10 every day!). Our suite had a fold out couch as well as a king bed - not always easy to find a good sleeping arrangement for 3 people. 2 armoirs with TVs. Very comfortable bed & great down pillows. Staff was very courteous. Excellent closet space. Room was quiet & had good views.

Free wine happy hour 5-6 pm every day. The lobby can be quite a happening spot during this time.

Only cons - virtually no counter or shelf space in the bath room. No vent either. Also, desk should have a mirror so that you don't have to put on your makeup in a steamy bathroom. These hotels are obviously designed by men!

  • Pros: Great location, very comfortable bed & pillows
  • Cons: Lack of counter space in bath, lack of mirrors outside bath

Great Hotel

by newgirl1

This hotel is super cute and located in the heart of downtown Chicago. The restaurant that is attached serves great food and the bar is trendy. The Cadillac Theater is next door and the Ford theater is a short walk. Overall this boutique hotel is convenient and provides nice rooms at affordable rates.

Good for the money

by berryberrysweet

I've stayed here twice on business, and I would say it's typical of the converted "boutique" hotels you'll find in other big cities. The first time I stayed in a weirdly pink room with a run-down bathroom. The more recent time my room was smaller, but chic and looked brand new. The staff is helpful and efficient, the location (in the theater district) is good, and all in all, this is a good value.

WHO BUILT THIS PLACE? HOBBITS?

by tomsmonkeyshack

I definitely wouldn't recommend it for business travel or extended stays. My room was very small, the closet isn't wide enough to hang up a suit without having to cram it in sideways, walls are paper thin, the desk and chair do not provide enough room to work on a laptop. The lighting in the room is awfully dim (I had to turn on every single lamp in the entire room just to read at night) and there was nowhere to put my suitcase without constantly having to step over it. Low water pressure in the showers and bathrooms are in serious need of renovation, especially for a hotel that prides itself on such a hip, modern feel downstairs.

  • Pros: DOWNTOWN ACCESS
  • Cons: SMALL, LOUD

This Loop business hotel takes its style cues from the Windy City's rich musical heritage and nearby theaters.

by Contributor

Just as "allegro" in music calls for a brisk tempo, the Hotel Allegro's lobby establishes an upbeat vibe for its guests. With a stimulating clash of vibrant colors and striking patterns, accented by modern and vintage-style furniture, the entryway immediately sets this hotel apart from commonplace corporate lodging. Guest rooms repeat the lobby's Chinese-red and cobalt-blue hues and feature iPod docking stations for cranking the tunes. Beds are outfitted with fluffy down comforters and a mound of lush pillows. Bathrooms are stocked with Aveda bath items. The hotel hosts complimentary coffee in the morning and wine reception in the evening. Amenities for business travelers include data ports, two-line speaker phones and free wireless Internet access.

simply alright

by misssweettea

the rooms though cute are super small so if you have luggage you feel crowded. the bathrooms are not what i expected. the bathrooms at holiday in or howard johnson are better. however the bed had a down comforter with feather pillows which allowed me to drift into a peaceful sleep. the staff is super friendly, down to earth, and very informative! i would go back. i just know what to expect this time around.

how can you go wrong

by frostedflake24

First I have to say that I have been to better hotels, but I have also paid almost twice the amount that I paid at the Allegro. If you are looking for an affordable place to go in this city that is pretty much near most visited spots (theatre, shopping, dinning) this is a good option. I can only wonder where some of these other people stayed that was better in the downtown zone of Chicago for the same or less then what they spent

at the Allegro. Oh and did you not read it was a old building before booking? ave chicago room $190-220, without some of the little perks. The lifts must have been fixed this last weekend, they were actually fast(7/9-7-11/04)

  • Pros: nice beds, fun decor, location
  • Cons: , doorman need help, gets booked fast
