Not good

by Dee64

My boyfriend and I thought this would be a nice place for my birthday dinner. We found the atmosphere to

be rather tense. Especially the way the owner walked around and intimidated the staff. Next time we

come to Chicago, we're going to get sushi!

Warm and cozy! Excellent bakery

by mariaumanskiy

We went with a whole family for lunch and it was amazing. Prices are not all that creazy and excellent service, food and coffe. The decor is outstanding. Want to come back!:)

Carefull, need to mention the waiter cheated on food!!! We ordered special lunch for 3 people, he brought only for 2. When i asked -how we supposed to split everything for 3 people, he artgued that this is the way it tis suposed to be. I insisted and then... he brough another tray fool of food!!! He just forgot to bring it!!! He told me he never knew :))

That was just such an obvious lie! But there is a pleanty of food and we took some boxed home for breakfast!

  • Pros: bakery and decor
  • Cons: cheating on food, wait stuff!!! Watch!

Dig into hearty Russian cuisine at this elegant, Old World tourist favorite.

by Contributor

The Scene
Ladies who lunch join a cheerful tourist crowd at this Eastern European restaurant and tea room just a stone's throw from the Mag Mile and Art Institute. Shiny brass chandeliers, retro Russian posters and elegant burgundy and dark wood accents give the rooms a cozy, contemporary air; congenial Russian servers patiently explain the nuances of the traditional menu.

The Food
With its abundance of beets, herring and other Russian staples, the Old World menu is an acquired taste for Midwestern palates, but daring diners will be rewarded with dishes like sweet, tangy Ukrainian borscht, a hot soup chunky with beets, cabbage, carrots and other root vegetables. Another classic, pelmeni (Russian dumplings) are stuffed with ground beef and onions and presented simply on a platter with sour cream and yogurt-garlic sauces. Other tempting options include baked eggplant, chicken croquettes, and cheese blintzes with raspberry sauce, which make a fine finish.

  • Pros: cozy ambienceintriguing foodpleasant service
  • Cons: an acquired taste

Yea!!!! Vodka

by tink32

The service was really great. The waiter was extremely helpful with the vodka choices which I considered an excellent experience. We were promptly seated and didn't have to wait long at all for anything. The stuffed mushrooms were a favorful appetizer but you don't get very many. This was actually an experience I would classify as interesting because of the Russian and European flair. My only problem was that I thought the main course was average.

  • Pros: great service, Vodka varieties, prompt
  • Cons: Average tasting food

Don't go if you have a time limit

by lskohn

Food's great, atmosphere over-the-top Rrrrrussian shmaltz, but service and kitchen timing are appalling. If you have theater or concert plans, this is not the place for a pre-show meal. Even though we were seated in a half-empty restaurant with more than enough time to spare, it took 40 minutes after our order was taken to get our entree - and the only appetizer was one soup! Stay away unless time is no object.

A Wonderful Adventure!

by robertp976

I don't understand why this restaurant has not been voted as NUMBER ONE in Chicago! It has it all. Great food, excellent service, close to theaters and the loop, and even a romantic atmosphere. The prices are within reason. When I go into the city, (I live 50+ miles out) this resturant has become my first choice for dinner or lunch. I've tried several items on the menu and never been disappointed. Truely a great adventure. Be sure to save room for desert.

  • Pros: awesome food choices, prompt service, romantic

Truly a Treat!

by st3ite

What a treat! The food was great. The service was outstanding.

I was actually able to sit and have a quiet conversation in a full dining room with my wife...a first for us in Chicago.

I had the stroganoff...classic, delicious. My wife's dish was outstanding as well. I was amazed at the selection of dishes....beef, chicken, vegan, seafood. Multiple choices of each. Even more options for vodka (of course)!

We didn't have any vodka...but we will next time, for sure!

  • Pros: service, quiet, wonderful food
  • Cons: can't think of any
