You must be kiding

How this place got so popular is beyond me. Food is very average, but the price isn't. Extremely over priced for what you get. It's a Vienna hot dog. While I enjoy them, there is not a whole lot of difference between a portillo's and any other hot dog stand in Chicago. So why I am paying double for one here? Plus the beef sandwich is triple the cost of most beef stands in Chicago. Name recognition is the only way this place keeps getting business.
If decor made it better...

Okay,
The joint looks nice. However, the food is inconsistant, small portions, and to top that off it is overpriced.
I can think of dozens of other places that have better food, many have been listed here. My advice is that if you want a McD's beef this is the place to go, boring and unoriginal.
- Pros: Nice decor
- Cons: Small portions, Not spicy enough, Don't care attitude

I was used to Portillo's when he served from the mobile hut in Villa Park years back before he became BIG. He has forgotten what a good Chicago Italian Beef sandwich looks like. New stores give you a small sandwich for the price and is less tasty than his old ones. Portillo's is a rip off and I will continue to patronize LUKE's who remembers how to make a beef.
- Pros: big restaurant
- Cons: price, size, taste
overrated tourist spot

How this place is even in the top ten i will never know. First off their beef sandwiches and burgers are greasy and slimey and there hot dogs are mediocre at best. The atmosphere is kind of cool, but you are still eating on a cafeteria tray! Plus who wants to pay $12 for a hotdog, fries and a coke! Leave this place for all the yuppies who do not know any better!
- Pros: atmosphere
- Cons: pricey, bad food

Assembly plant food
by bigpaul55 at Citysearch
One of the worst hot dogs in the world. Made in a fast-paced dull mechanical atmosphere with no personality at all. Portillo's personnel are robots, there is no customer communications. The entire experience reminded me of a motor car assembly plant. My lips will never again touch a Portillo's "hot dog".
- Pros: available parking
- Cons: impersonal, crowded, pushy
Just another rip off

I've been to Portillo's on a number of occasions. Mostly when it's the only game in town. I think this chain of hot dog stands has lost it's roots. This was a man who built a business from a tiny little stand and grew into a coporate giant. This establishement has forgotten what made him a success. Customer service! They have none. Poor logistics in serving people. Sometimes the easiest orders take the longest for them to prepare. Only because they do not care about the customer. I wish this man would go broke and do us all a favor and dissappear.
- Pros: None
- Cons: poor service, long wait
to expensive
