Disappointed
by snj0528
This was my second visit to Tsunami's. You can tell it's been around for awhile, meaning it needs refreshing in decor & staff. The food for the most part was good, with the exception of the Toro tuna. Was very chewy because of the lines of grissell throughout the meat. The staff seemed more interested in visiting with each other than attending to the needs of their patrons. The waitress acted as if my wife didn't exist. Wrong move, because we decide together as to the tip percentage. Until I hear of a major change, I will find another sushi bar on my next visit to Chicago. In case the owner reads these, the night of our visit was Friday, October 31st.
- Pros: None, just another average sushi bar
- Cons: Toro, staff
Best sushi in Chicago!!!!!!!!

Great food, the perfect drinks, and the one and only chocolate tower, yummmmm!!!!!
I love this place and will eat sushi no where else.
Good Sushi, Great Selection
by foodtasters
Sitting at the sushi bar was a good experience. The service was ok. The sushi was good. There wasn't anything we could complain about. They did not have certain fish the day we were there. It was a downer, but it is also a sign that the restaurant maintains high quality fish. It was a good enough that we would go back.
- Pros: fish, service
Solid sushi

Recent trip to Chicago landed us at Tsunami after being recommended by the hotel's concierge service. The atmosphere in the restaurant was great and it was quite the place for people watching, if that helps to your dining recommendations. The food itself was what you would expect but didn't leave you craving to come back the next day. All in all it does the job a Japanese restaurant should and wins extra points for the ambiance.
Our family favorite

As with children, it stinks when one of yours is not seen in the best light! We love Tsunami and have for years. The food is the best its ever been and I am happy to have them in our neighborhood. Congrats on the recent local reviews!!!
- Pros: a room for everyone, great for families or a date upstairs by the fire
- Cons: sometimes sushi comes a bit slow, weekends!!!
Dissapointed....a big let down

Chose Tsunami for my birthday dinner this past weekend with my husband whose never eaten there. I have been there several times, over three years ago. I used to go there alot with friends and share sushi and bottles of sake. Food was always good and so were drinks, even dessert. Our appetizers were way too small. The beef asparagus roll looked like it had been rolled in egg, rather than beef the meat was so thin. The crab cakes were actually a crab cake, you only got one on the plate. The first appetizer was cold. Our drinks were horrible. Its really hard to screw up a mai tai and mojito. Both tasted like they were made with skol vodka with hardly any juice or anything else, really bad. I didn't finish either one. My husband had the teriyake chicken which he said was good. I had the shrimp and scallops, which was actually kind of gross. The scallops were fishy and rubbery tasting, and the shrimp was not de-veined and were overcooked and I didn't enjoy it one bit. Even the chocolate tower for dessert didn't taste the same. Whatever happened there, I don't know, but it's not good, I'll will probably never go back unfortunately, because I used to love sitting upstairs by the fireplace with friends and having some food and cocktails. I won't waste my money next time. I couldn't believe a gold coast japanese restaurant doesn't de-vein shrimp.
Great atmosphere, sushi needs improvement

The atmosphere is great at Tsunami, particularly the upstairs area. The only problem we've run into is the quality of the fish isn't the best. I've had very stringy fish almost every time I've been there, so be careful. Aside from that, the sake selection is great.
- Pros: Sake selection
- Cons: Sushi quality, price
Highly Recommended! Great sushi, great drinks - love it!

Sushi is something I only take on recommendation, and when Tsunami came up from a girlfriend I was dying to try it. She was right - this place is perfect. The service is prompt, but not rushed, and for a Japanese restaurant that seems a lot more like a sushi bar than a sit-down, its quite the opposite. Very romantic for a date, had a great time there on one! Love the drink menu - I recommend the lemonade martini with raspberry - its fabulous!!
Great Sushi

I took my friend here for her birthday and we had nothing but an enjoyable evening. Our waiter was attentive but not overbearing and the selection of different sushi/sashimi was expansive. Great sake and atmosphere as well. Will definitely come back!
- Pros: great food
- Cons: none
hidden gem with the best sushi in the city!!!!!
by onioneyes
All of my experiences at Tsunami have always been very positive. Their food is always fresh, their staff is always friendly, and the environment is always comfortable. I really appreciate feeling relaxed in an upscale restaurant - the stuffiness and snobbery of other places just ruins the meal. They have so many dishes - but I would recommend the Hamachi Jalapeno for an appetizer (mmmm thinly sliced hamachi with slivers of jalapeno!), an oyster shooter (so delicious I could hardly stand it), and a variety of maki rolls for dinner (the Sumo Roll is to DIE for!!!!). The trademark Tower dessert is so good no matter how stuffed you are, you will find room. A chocolate casing filled with ice cream and drizzled with sauces and mousse - how can you go wrong! They recently added new drinks to their menu as well, and the Jasmine Vanillatini is definitely something worth checking out. Also, make sure to take a stroll around the restaurant. There are several different rooms and an upstairs lounge that each has a different look or feel. Absolutely worth every visit!
