Historic wine shop that boasts top-notch vintages and superlative customer service in Old Town.

The Scene
This family-run wine store has been around since the 19th century, making it the oldest in Chicago, possibly the entire country. Three rooms (a main space housing most of the stock, a library-style tasting area and historic museum quarters) filled with wine and associated items attract folks of all sorts. Glunz's staff never comes off as snooty and is always ready to offer assistance.
The Goods
A celebration of all things lush, but wine is the focus. Though French varietals dominate, plenty of bottles hail from places like California, Spain, Australia and Germany, too. In an attempt to dissuade wine snobbery, carefully selected vintages can be found for as little as $4.99 or as much as $600. Bottles are opened regularly for customers to taste, particularly on weekends. Specialty beer and spirits (think rare, aged cognacs) also draw a discerning crowd.
- Pros: Loads of French wineopen early
- Cons: Parking difficult
Old-fashioned wine merchant
by d_lefly at Citysearch
House of Glunz imports huge quantities of cheap French wine for the local liquor chains: that's their bread & butter business. They keep their tiny, antique store because it's a family tradition. Space is tight, selection is limited, quality is very high and sales are frequent. You don't have to be an expert to shop here. Buy what's on sale, then come back and buy a case or two of the best! They have semi-annual tastings, too.
- Pros: quality, price, sales!
- Cons: parking
