Apparently I only like Detroit-style deep dish....

by mccarthy113

After living with Pizza Papalis in Detroit for so many years, I just assumed that that was a decent representation of Chicago-style deep dish pizza. Boy, was I wrong! The pizza arrived and it was not at all what I know and love as "deep dish". It was essentially a really doughy pizza. While a Pizza Papalis pizza weighs like 20 pounds from being packed with cheese and meat and vegetables, Uno was mostly dough, with the usual amount of cheese and toppings on top. Just sitting on top! Like a regular pizza! Why is that so special?

Therefore, I don't refer to Michigan deep dish pizzas as "Chicago-style" anymore. Who wants a mouthful of dough? Go eat some pancakes.

  • Pros: Historical aspect, I guess
  • Cons: Just not that good!

Great Deep Dish!

by xopineapple71890xo

Chicago style pizza is perfected here! The crust is flaky, the cheese is hot and gooey, and the sauce is perfect! The old-Italian/old Chicago decor is great too. Definitely recommended.

  • Pros: Delicious pizza, decor, service
  • Cons: wait times

The original Chicago pizza pie, a throwback

by eskercurve

I'll be frank about Pizzeria Uno, and concise - if you want authentic Chicago pizza pie, go here. It won't be to everyone's tastes, and it won't live up to a lot of peoples' expectations. What you get is basically a recipe that hasn't changed in the decades this place has been around - a pie crust that is crumbly and hearty, combined with a powerful tomato sauce that is spiced lightly and with cheese that is simply the best in the country, leaving you satisfied with one (and a guilty second!) piece, you will rejoice tomorrow when you have leftovers. Many people are put off with the wait - come early. Many people complain about the wait staff - talk to the manager, they will come. And if you are used to substandard pizza (like St. Louis style with Provel ... Provolone and velveeta cheese mixed *shudder*, or New York style pizza with gallons of grease per slice) then you will not like this. However if you are unbiased and simply looking for a homely, dark pizza house then this is the place. Order the pepperoni pizza for an extra special taste that will leave you breathless at how pizza should be.

  • Pros: Pizza ... what you came there for!
  • Cons: Parking, potentially LOONG wait times

Detroit has better Chicago-style pizza.. no seriously.

by FamousAnus

I was SO disappointed with Pizzeria Uno's pizza after having seen a segment about them on TV. There was about an hour wait [and I'm willing to wait for GOOD food], when we finally were seated we had mediocre service from an old lady who was obviously prejudiced against young people, and their food really kind of sucked.

Their salad almost looked like those packaged salads you can buy for cheap at the grocery store.. and tasted like it too. The dressing wasn't great either.

To top it off their pizza was fairly bland. The cheese was good, the crust was OK, but the sauce was god awful. I'm thinking maybe locals like this place just because they remember it from their childhoods or something.. but the pizza DEFINITELY is not all it's cracked up to be. My favorite Chicago-style pizza is from Pizza Papalis in Detroit, Michigan. All of their ingredients are amazing and their sauce is perfectly seasoned and flavorful. Pizza Papalis puts Pizzeria Uno to SHAME!

  • Pros: cheese?
  • Cons: salad, pizza, sauce, service, long wait

not worth the wait

by masher18

Have not had Uno's since I was a kid and decided to go after a day down at Navy Pier. Arrived at 5:15 with our 2 kids and was told it would be a 45-90 minute wait, but that they put your order in so that it is 80% cooked when you get to your table. We finally sat down a few minutes before 7 (almost 2 hour wait) and we did not get our pizza until 7:30. Our waiter was very rude with a huge attitude problem and couldn't have cared less that the pizza was taking so long--in fact he didn't even notice we had been waiting so long until I pointed it out to him. And even then, he acted like I was making up the whole time-frame thing. When we finally got it, we were really disappointed. It tasted like it had been sitting for 15 minutes on a counter or something. The only redeeming thing about our evening was when the manager came over to ask how everything was and we told her about what we had experienced. She was very apologetic and ended up taking 1/2 $ off our pizza which is not what we were looking for, as we told her. All in all, the service was TERRIBLE, the pizza mediocre and I am sure we will never go back again.

Great Pizza

by IceMouse

We went to Pizzeria Uno for lunch and avoided the long wait, at 3PM or so there was only a 15-30 minute wait for 2, which was wonderful because I expected to wait much longer from the reviews. Also, they take your pizza order at the time of reservation, so even if you have to wait 45 minutes for a table, your pizza will be ready when you sit down, or at least be in preparation. The restaurant was small, but I wouldn't consider it cramped. My girlfriend and I ordered a small Spinocolli pizza(Spinach and Broccoli specialty) and a salad bowl to share. Both were very delicious. I personally did not think the spinocolli tasted so great, but my girlfriend thought that it was amazing. The pizza itself was wonderful and I liked the crust a lot, it was mainly the broccoli that I didn't find so great on the pizza. Other than that, great restaurant. My girlfriend and I were not able to finish a small pizza,

Yes it's small but THE BEST PIZZA, Even open late on weeknights

by azcollegebball

As a young couple visiting Chicago we asked the cab driver where the best pizza was in town at 11 o'clock at night. He took us to Pizzeria Uno. We order whatever the house recommended and order Cheese Garlic Bread and Mild Boneless Buffalo Wings. The garlic bread was good but not great but the wings were awesome. They had all the flavor of the spicy wings but none of the heat. Then the Pizza came. This thing was perfect. The sauce was great, the flavors of the meat of the pepperonis and canadian bacon was great, the pizza had enough cheese to say that it actually had cheese, and the crust was crumbly goodness that leaves you eager to eat the crust. I visited Chicago and decided to move to Chicago, not for pizzeria uno (but thats a great reason too), but it is definately well worth the wait. I WILL go back and gladly wait for over an hour to eat. Hope this helps...

Worst Service In the world

by deeepenuf

I would not recommend this place to anyone. If you don't like bad service, stay away. Was told it would be a 45min wait to seat a party of two, waited over an hour and was never seated, so I left.
