It's Classic for a Reason

by Gesq

The only thing better than the steaks here (never had a bad one - always cooked to perfection, in my opinion) is being able to enjoy one on the sidewalk on a balmy evening, watching the colorful Rush Street crowd walk by.

This place gets slammed. I'd recommend arriving early. Otherwise, expect to wait. The bartenders are great and can actually make a proper drink (unlike some of the models that some places use).

If you're feeling casual and not in the mood for a proper steak, but still feel like eating something that had parents. Try the filet sliders. They're insanely good. Also, the crabmeat avocado is great.

  • Pros: Great Steaks, Friendly Staff, Crabmeat Avocado
  • Cons: Crowded, Long wait times at peak hours

good steak

by ethanmc

I tried Gibsons out on valentines evening , just this past one.. We both thought it was great . It had a good vibe, lots of people, a guy playing the piano in the lounge ,it felt like it was the place to be. I made reservations almost 2 weeks ahead fyi . The milet mignon was very good. Definetley on of the best steaks ive had. every thing else was pretty basic. The waiter was a bit harsh. The cheese potatto is huge. but pretty plain tasting.. But i would deffinetly say its worth checking out.. Its in a fun area of Chicago, lots of stuff going around . lots of good steak houses in Mag mile probably should just check them all out...We both give it a B

You go for the atmosphere, not the food!

by james1970

Made the trek to Gibson's. This is a hard one to review. First off, it's a cool place where you will definitely see any celebs in town for whatever the reason. The place is always brimming with people and does have a good bar and a fun vibe.

Here is the problem. The food is overrated and the service and the attitude goes a long way in me giving this a below average rating. I gues because there is so many people walking in the door all the time that Gibson's doesn't have to go out of their way to make you happy. I just didn't get the feeling that the place really cared if I was there, enjoying myself, or not.

Foodwise, yes it's good. But its not great. Its just the attitude that turns me off. I actually had better luck at the Gibson's in Rosemont. Better service, more friendly staff, and i thought the food was better.

Go to Gibson's if you want the "see and be seen" arena. If you want a good steak, there are better places in Chicago without the attitude.

Rome to Chicago for a recommended Steak from American Bob Poulsom, Shame the food wasnt up to his recommendation.

by mchillsmotorcycles

Flew from the Beverley Hills Hotel in Rome on the advise of American BOB Poulsom, unfortunately was a wasted journey as food was not as expected and service was poor. Sorry BOB but wasted $1200 on a flight to taste your recommended food. The steak was done the way they wanted it not the way I wanted which was a big dissapointment. Celebs present but hey, I was there to eat good food. Shame I looked forward to it after the big run up giving by Bob In Rome. No hard feelings Bob and your Girlfriend is lovely Bob.

  • Pros: Celebs.......wooopppiiii

A GIANT DISAPPOINTMENT!

by larry_lapine

After travelling to Chicago for over 25 years, I had the opportunity to take several guests to the "famous" Gibsons last Friday evening. We had reservations for 8 p.m. for 6 people, then during the day 2 more people joined our party. I called ahead to advise Gibsons, and the hostess said to come in and they would have no problem accomodating us. We arrived at 7:45, and it wasn't until 9 p.m that we were seated and nothing was said to apologize. They sat us in the corner where it was so noisy we couldn't even have conversation with each other. Then, 2 out of 8 people got their food right away, and the rest waited at least 20 minutes more. The manager eventually did come to us and apologized and gave us free desert. However, for spending well over $300 for dinner, my guests were extremely disappointed and probably will never want to return again. It was a total disappointment for all.

  • Pros: Great food, lots of celebs to see.
  • Cons: Way too noisy. Staff will attend to you if you have lots of money & they kknow it!

Avoid Completely - Rude Service

by jonniechan

I went here with my girlfriend several weeks back. The staff was snobby and the food was like any other steakhouse. I would rather go to Ruth Chris's or Chicago Chophouse for steak and ambiance than Gibson's. This place is overrated.

  • Pros: Minutes from Michigan Avenue, surrounded by other popular restaurants and bars
  • Cons: Snobby, Food is slightly above Average, Service is Terrible, Parking Impossible on Rush Street

Best steak in the city! Fun atmosphere.

by abbie27

Gibson's is one of my favorite steakhouses in the city. The food is so good. I highly recommend the filet as well as the mashed potatoes. The desserts are out of this world - try the Muddy Bottom, which has oreo crust, ice cream and macadamia nuts. Definitely a fun place for dinner as well, with great people watching.

  • Pros: Great location, amazing steak, fabulous desserts
  • Cons: Long wait if you don't have reservations

Fantastic Service! Great Food! Pretty People!

by mtibbens

WIth those three things - how can you go wrong? Our waiter, Richard, was incredible - try to get him. He's very helpful, devilishly funny and will take care of your every need. The food is amazing. The steaks are done perfectly, at just the right temp for the natives, servings are huge and the martinis wash everything down nicely. It is true that they're a bit more expensive than the average restaurant - but who wants average?

  • Pros: Valet, location, food, service, cocktails.....
  • Cons: I'm drawing a blank....

Good food, too crowded

by darkhawk5

Gibsons is obiously a Chicago landmark, and for that, it stands to reason that there is a lot of interest in the restaurant. It's almost impossible to get a reservation, but if you do, the food is great. My only complaint is that we couldn't get reservations for months. Aside from that, the food is great, but I think there are other comparable places, too, without the 9:30 PM dinner.

  • Pros: Great food
  • Cons: Can't get reservations
