Tasty but Tardy
by SusannaS
We live within a few blocks of the cafe. The menu includes a wide selection of "breakfast" items, which is rare to find in this area. The pancakes, biscuits/gravy, and eggs benedict are quite tasty. The potatoes are decent but lukewarm. The service is tardy and also lukewarm. The wait can be up to 30 mins. Other places in the area serving breakfast items include: P.J. Clarke's (better service, fewer breakfast items); Fox & Oble Cafe; and Panera Breads (both order at the counter, seat yourself).
Best eggs ever!!!

We went for breakfast on Sunday and had a blast. The staff was friendly and outgoing. Our server was awesome. I wish I could remember his name. The food was exceptional and great tasting. I have found my once a week place to go and enjoy a great breakfast. The atmosphere was robust with laughter and conversation. I loved it. I would recommend to anyone looking for that very metro feeling cafe with great food.
Best Breakfast in Chicago.

We are not from Chicago, but frequently travel there. We discovered the West Egg Cafe while on a trip and now we stop in every time we are in Chicago for one of the most "Eggseptional" breakfasts ChiTown has to offer. Always ask for Rod. He's always taken care of us and is a great host! No matter what your heart desires, you'll find it on their menu and there are no disappointments here. They have everything for the heart and healthy to the very scrumptious. The kitchen is skilled and expedites every order. You may have to wait on the busier weekends but it is worth it. The management is on top of everything and the service and quality are ALWAYS consistent. They have a great atmosphere where dining can take place at the breakfast counter or you can sit in a window seat and overlook the busy Chicago Streets. Go. You'll love it!
- Pros: Menu variety and consistent quality for food and service.
- Cons: Long waits. Expect 30-45 minutes on weekend mornings. Go early.
Terrible customer service

First time I tried ordering I was placed on hold for 10 min, once I placed the order, the girl read it back to me and asked me to wait to give me a total. 9.5 min later someone else picked up the phone and asked If she could help with something. I find it unacceptable that it took almost 20 min just to place an order.
Disappointing

I just moved to Streeterville from Lake View and I've been on the hunt for a breakfast place to replace Stella's Diner my old favorite. West Egg certainly seemed promising, but unfortunately disappointed. I've tried WE three times now and my issues were the same each time. When you walk in, the waiters ask "how many" and then take you to a table. For the most part the waiters aren't very friendly, but they aren't rude either. I am usually alone for breakfast and I like to read the paper...a 4-top is always better than a 2-top. I know WE gets busy so I've tried to go early to not hog to much space. The one thing that really irks me is that when they sit you down, they don't clear away the other settings even when they know no one else will be joining you. Everywhere else I've ever been always clears away the extra settings. I guess WE likes to leave them there for the next sitting...how healthy is that?? Not only that, the table is crammed full of stuff...a water jug, a coffee jug, making it impossible to read.
Anyway, this morning I am off to Mary's Cafe to see what that is like.
YUM!

I was in Chicago in August and we ate at West Egg Cafe every day. They have a variety of breakfast and lunch foods, and everything is great. They use a lot of spinach, feta, tomato, avocado, and other tasty, healthy stuff that is much better than your average breakfast restaurant. Vegetarians have a good selection also, and one of my favorites is their side dish of fresh strawberries with whipped cream. Try to go during the week because it is busy, but it's worth the wait on the weekend!
- Pros: Great taste, healthy ingredients
- Cons: Service can be great, awful, and anywhere inbetween
BEST OF THE BEST

I would like to consider myself a breakfast connoisseur, as I do a lot of early morning dining. This place, although a tremendously long line, was well worth the wait. We got there around 9:30 on a Saturday, big mistake if you are seeking a quick meal, we were told to wait 25 minutes. After sifting through the menu though we were more than willing to wait. If early morning reaaaaly good omelets are your thing than this is your place in the Windy City. Only negative thing was, and this was our own fault, avoid sitting outside if possible in the sun, bright sun + eggs don't leave you as hungry as you once thought. A+++++ though for food.
Comfortable coffee shop off Michigan Avenue serves breakfast all day.

In Short
This popular breakfast stop for businesspeople and tourists from nearby hotels also attracts a shopping crowd at lunch. Topping the breakfast menu are signature skillet dishes with potatoes, meat, veggies, cheese and two eggs. The filling Grabowski features a large grilled Polish sausage, topped with onion and cheese, served with two eggs and potatoes. Other morning options include omelets, pancakes and French toast. For lunch, choose from sandwiches, salads and the special rotisserie chicken.
Soooo tas-TEE

I miss this place soooo much. Years ago, I used to work nearby and would go about once a week for blueberry pancakes *drool* or oatmeal *mmmmm* or chicken on a pita *yum*. Everything I ever ate there was just intensely satisfying. Many times there is a wait, but it's usually not too long.
- Pros: Good eats!
- Cons: Close quarters in some seating areas if you need a great deal of personal space
Great for Breakfast

During a visit to Chicago in June 2003, we sampled the West Egg twice. The first time, we had difficulty getting in because they were full and about 20 people were in line ahead of us. When we finally got a table, the service and the food were surprisingly good--better than I expected. We visited again the following day and again the food and service were great. You get a lot for your money at the West Egg.
- Pros: Excellent value, Great for breakfast, Popular
- Cons: Sometimes crowded
