Big, authentic New York-style deli sandwiches a stone's throw from Rush Street.

The Scene
Though there are a handful of tables in the small wood-paneled room and on the enclosed outdoor patio, Ashkenaz does mostly on-the-go business--particularly in the morning, when white-collar types and Gold Coasters step in to get their fixes of lox and bagels, creamy cheese blintzes or crispy potato pancakes.

The Food
The staff is generous with portions, stacking sandwiches high with deliciously lean corned beef, chunky chicken salad (along with a dozen other salads), and lox and cream cheese. Other traditional deli offerings include noteworthy matzo ball and kreplach soups, plus rugalach, chopped herring, and assorted meats and cheeses.

Great place!

This place is great, especially because it is one of the few deli's in Chicago. The people are friendly, prices are good, and they pile the meat sky-high on their sandwiches. And, if you are looking for those fabulous blue-cheese stuffed olives, they have them there! I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a fresh, non-subway type sandwich.

• Pros: price for what you get, friendly staff, casual atmosphere
• Cons: not many places to sit during the winter
