TREATED LIKE FAMILY / CRAIG IS AN EXPERT. As my father has dealt with Horwitz for about 30 years - he recommended I pay them a visit as I was in need of a simple watch band repair for an old Movado I own. A young professional that is new to the city, and working downtown, the Water Tower location was extremely convenient from the Red Line and a joy to visit.

I was treated like family by Craig, his mother Phyllis (the NICEST business owner in the entire city who still works everyday and is in her 80's!!) and Lima.

This is truly another fine example of a hidden gem business that you expect to find in a major city like Chicago. It is not in the main mall section, but rather tucked away on the Professional level. The store's beautiful setting is IDEAL for honest advice and no-pressure buying for something that is truly special. When I need to buy that ring one day for my girlfriend, no matter where I live, I will make a trip to Chicago to get advice from Craig. He's already given me some tips, and without a doubt he is one of the most knowledgeable jewelry experts in the city.

This store is worlds apart from a chain jeweler store or major designer, as you really get a sense of pride from Craig and Phyllis, as they have continued this family's legacy for over 113 years.

YOU TOO COULD LOSE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN CASH JUST LIKE I DID!

The short version is that after patiently waiting for approximately FOUR months for an engagement ring that this jeweler was to create for us (based on several pictures we brought to them), my fiancee and I refused to take delivery on the ring due to learning (from an independent appraiser) that H. Horwitz Jewelers had substituted a lesser color and clarity than we agreed to for over a carat worth of diamonds in setting of the ring and this was without our knowledge or consent.

We've now spent several weeks attempting to secure a refund (several thousand dollars) which this jeweler refuses to do. AGAIN, WE HAVE NO RING IN OUR POSSESSION. Let me share with you, H.Horwitz Jewelers has offered to reduce the price of the ring by hundreds of dollars...but we have no desire to do business here since we have lost all trust and confidence in this business.

We have had no choice but to file a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau of Chicago (Case #94369873), dated 10-4-2011 and we are hoping to avoid filing a formal complaint with the Illinois Attorney General's Office in the Consumer Fraud Bureau. We're working people and cannot afford to lose several thousand dollars.

I hesitated writing this review in hopes that we would secure our refund. We were promised this several times to no avail.

Very emotionally upsetting is that we have now missed our planned wedding date, and financially cannot afford to make another ring purchase without our refund.



Here are just a few things you can expect when you do business with this jeweler:

-Expect the price of your purchase to be increased if it's not in writing (our experience)

-Expect your timeline to be exceeded due to any/all types of excuses (our experience)

-Expect not to reach this jeweler by phone and that your phone messages will not be returned in a timely fashion (our experience)

-Expect unprofessionalism from this jeweler if you disagree with on any point (This jeweler has never heard the phrase "the customer's always right")

And expect that of course this jeweler will deny and refute all of the above to save face.

In closing, let me share with you what this jeweler's response was when I told him that the center stone of the ring they created was set lopsided (and this is verbatim) "Well you told me to make it look exactly like the picture and that's what we did"…

Not Really Impressed. My fiancee and I visited this showroom on Michigan avenue a while back in hopes of making a purchase. We were disappointed...it started with amount of time we were kept waiting in a showroom with only two other people there but then weren't really much impressed with the goods or selection.

This jeweler doesn't have much in the way of inventory to show you...there is alot of older jewelry for sale (I guess that's known as "estate" jewelry?) We weren't really in the market to make a used ring purchase.

After speaking with the owner, we found him a bit of a character...he's very talkative, but seemed to be a bit of a "know it all" and was maybe just a little too anxious in his pursuit of a sale.

I guess we were expecting more than what we found...the website we visited beforehand appeared impressive...but the overall experience wasn't.

We did find a jeweler who exceeded expectations on jeweler's row (we won't embarrass this business by using their name) so we are happily on our way to planning the other events of our wedding.…

Reliable, Quality Jeweler. My husband and I bought our wedding rings from Craig last winter. We were both impressed by his thoughtful approach to designing bands that would compliment my engagement ring as well as his demonstrated integrity while conducting business. We returned to Craig to have my antique engagement ring cleaned; it came back looking better than new. It is important to us that we support honest businesses that offer great products and services. Most Trustworthy and Knowledgeable. My family dealt with Horwitz for some 40 years. They continue to be the best in the business. They will design, help you design and/or find whatever you are looking for. I just sold an engagement ring back to Horwitz that was purchased from them in 1965! Craig then went on the hunt to find to most perfect earings. I used the proceeds from the engagement ring to buy the earlngs! He takes the time to thoroughly explain everything but he does not "sell'. That is a refreshing change.

Horwitz is a hidden jewel that is head and shoulders above any quality or pricing you could find on jewelers row! It is the only place to go for jewelry!…
