Chicago's Best Dog - Ten Thumbs Up

by mojopo

I used to favor another dog shack until Byron's moved into my neighborhood, in Forest Park. I visit Byron's Madison Ave. location at least once a month now, because they make a perfect Chi-Town dog and the service is outstanding. I've enjoyed jumbo dogs dragged through the garden and topped with celery salt, served by people who treat me extremely well - they pay attention to every customer. Best of all, I can go in there, tie on my feed bag and eat inexpensively. I'm not a fat person, but I could be if I tried hard. They even give away free balloons to little kids. Many dog shacks use Vienna hot dogs but without the best condiments of good quality, no one can be like Byron's. I LOVE the nuclear-green relish. Visually, it's a real kick, and the tomatoes and pickles are a-plenty. Don't miss a perfect dog, served up by mid-westerners who actually like people. Go there. Thank me later.

  • Pros: Delicious, fresh food, generous sizes, excellent varierty on the menu
  • Cons: I wish I could go there every day but I can't. That is the only downside.

Byron's is the Best!

by JamesOtis

I am a hotdog connoisseur! I have eaten at almost every hotdog stand in Chicago and the Burbs and the best hotdog is Chicago is Byron?s. The place is small and could best be described as a ?dumpy shack,? with a lot of character. Enough about the ambiance. The hotdog is loaded with every kind of condiment you can put on a Chicago dog. And I am not talking about heaps of chili, or slices of bacon, or gooey cheese, or any other crazy west coast nonsensical idea of good hotdog (Pinks). I am talking about a Chicago dog that is stretched to the max.with tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles, relish, mustard, onions and sport peppers

Byrons is the Best!

by Chicagokate

No question that this is the place for hot dogs... but they have the best burger around as well! Toppings are always fresh and these guys really know what they're doing. Also, for a dive, it is clean and friendly. A must-visit for Chicagoans.

  • Pros: Great food, fast service, location.
  • Cons: No place to sit down unless it is summer.

Not top 10 material

by cbotflunky

"North Wrigleyville" is a real stretch for this "unsavory" location on Irving and Sheridan. Classic Chicago Greek guy and what might be his wife run the show. You inevitably ask yourself " I wonder if they live together after slinging dogs all day" could you imagine? Can't answer that one, did not want to ask. Their hook is Green Peppers and a mountain of chopped iceberg lettuce on top of the usual fixings ( electric green relish, sport peppers, celery salt...) Fresh thin cut fries were above average but flat soft drink was no good! Dirty beady-eyed pigeons starred me down on one of two grimmy red picnic tables as I tried to dine Alfresco-style outside. Thought I was in a Alfred Hitchcock movie from 1950 something, not pleasent. No way do you take out-of-town company here to experience a Chicago-style dog. Face the facts, it's all about the schtick, and the two super-dawg characters or the foul-mouthed "gangsters" at wiener circle are far more memorable. Sorry Byron, tasty dog, but your overrated.

Great Chicago Dog!

by tall_tickler

What can I say...... WOW! What a dog...... nothing better than stumpling over to Byrons after a Cubs game and throwing a dog down my throat! Perfect example of shit-hole having the best food! If they sold Oldstyle, I would sleep in the back! Tickler strikes again...

  • Pros: Great Dog!
  • Cons: I dont live across the street!

Best dog on earth

by etoczylowski

The greatest institution ever created. Best hot dog I ve ever had! Nothing better than after tying one on at the cubs game and stuffing my face w/ a dog while I wander aimlessly to my apt.

  • Pros: Real chicago dogs

Wrigleyville shack serves up Chicago-style hot dogs to kids of all ages.

by Contributor

In Short
The scene at this Wrigley spot is Chicago dog-shack chic: bright yellow walls, a tiny counter, a grill and two beat-up, red picnic tables outside. With 11 toppings (including celery salt and hot "sport" peppers), the Byron's dog is a messy five-napkin Vienna Beef frank that requires a two-handed pickup. Other offerings include french fries and chili tamales.

  • Pros: great chicago dog
  • Cons: zero ambience

Byron's is only challenged by Bill's Hot Dog Stand, an Evanston legend just north of Howard St. on Asbury (Western) and Home Depot/North Avenue. Dog Lovers can't beat these 3 locations for the best in the city...unless you're in Wrigley and the Cubs are winning!

A garden on a bun

by jtee

That was, may still be, their motto. Byron's is the place I dream of whenever I consider having a hot dog. I live in the burbs now and Byron's is one of the joints I miss the most!

  • Pros: Inexpensive, Good parking, All those veggies
