The Scene
Far from the glitz of many city spas, Ether is known mostly to neighborhood residents who pass the curious cherry-wood door announcing: "Women only." An energetic Korean man or woman--husband-and-wife owners--welcomes you to the low-key, windowless basement space. A small hair-styling counter, manicure station (in the kitchen), two rooms--massage and facial--and the hot tub and sauna area make up this quiet, holistic healing-based spa.

The Services
Arrive early for muscle-relaxing in the hot tub, dry sauna or steam room. With few clients at any one time, you won't feel shy about disrobing. Facials are soothing, even sleep-inducing, leaving skin silky with Ether's recommended (and pricey) French-made Yon Ka products. Massages are an enlightening analysis of body and mind. Expect some pain while the therapist tests pressure points--but pay attention to his valuable explanation of corresponding emotional deficiencies and stresses that may be affecting your overall well-being.
